Fahrenheit 451 is a futuristic novel, telling the story of a time where books and independent thinking are outlawed. In a time so unenlightened, where those who want to better themselves by thinking, are outlawed and killed. In the future where people don’t have rights to read and are modeled to think, nearly like robots. Their mind is dominated by the society so everyone is brainwashed. Happiness is supreme goal of government. Books and ideas are destroyed, books are incinerated, where as ideas thinking becomes a danger to society and is not tolerated. They both represent fire. A hearth is traditionally symbolize home, the salamander is the officially symbol of firemen and fire place. Fahrenheit 451 has a dominant image - fire, where there is a book, there is a fire burning. The symbol is an irony to the life in the book, it implies the ruins causing by fire has expanded not only at home but also in the entire society. Mildred’s sleeping bill is the evidence that the insane world has changed or even damaged home and it is intending to ruin the whole human world. Moreover, Mildred’s betrayal to Montag – she tells firemen that Montag has hide some books at home and started to read them, is also ironic to the “home fire”- hearth, fire has burnt not only books but also people’s mind, for the less communication with others, they do not even know which is right and cannot think up their own …show more content…
