The story “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner was written in 1930’s, a time where if a woman was alone or had no company they were frowned upon or looked in another light. Emily Garrison showed tendencies of a lonely women looking for companionship after her father's death. She became secluded away from the rest of the town, “After her father's death she went out very little”. According to Crime Museum being antisocial can cause someone to become a killer. Miss Emily had a psychological problem causing her to kill someone or want to keep his body and her father's body.
After being seen with Homer Barron, a construction worker, the town was sure she would convince him to marry her. Manipulation is also a
sign of becoming a killer, as stated by Crime Museum. Then Homer disappeared, giving the thought that he left her. When Emily died they found Homers decomposed body lying in the bed, this can be classified as a form of necrophilia. The definition of necrophilia is sexual intercorse or attraction with a corpse. Necrophila can be caused by rejection or fear of rejection. A real life example would be the famous serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer. Jeffrey Dahmer had a rough childhood his parents left him in his last year of highschool. He needed company, which lead to picking up a hitchhiker near his house. Then they proceed to get drunk and when the man decided to leave Dahmer acted in a violent way, by strangling him until he died. He then proceed to cut up him body and dispose of him in the woods. He later killed 10 more men furthering his methods of killing into necrophilia and cannibalism (not all necrophiliacs become serial killers or cannibals). Miss Emily may have killed Homer out of fear of him leaving her, as her dad did when he died. By keeping the body, he will always be there never leaving, and he is all hers, serving her needs.
Her choice of killing is also interesting, posion. By using poison this has the killer watch the person slowly die, without the victim know the have be poisoned (depending on fashion of poisoning). Poison also isn't violent like stabbing or shooting, but it also suggests is more personal and more revenge oriented. When Emily went to pharmacist asked for the arsenic, its suggests premeditation. Premeditation is thinking and planning out the crime before it's carried out.
MIss Emily killed Homer in fear of being alone again, as she was when her father died. She kept the body of Homer to have him there when ever she need companionship.
