Symbolism In A Rose For Emily
In William Faulkner “A Rose for Emily’’ we think about who is Emily, what does the rose symbolizes, and most of all who is the narrator. Throughout most of Faulkner’s story for me as a reader I wanted to figure that out. In the beginning Emily is presented as a woman who grew up wealthy never having to worry about anything. But over time things changed after her father’s death. Later on, Emily never really takes notice of the present. She never really got over being under her father’s wing. Emily became a woman known throughout town as a mysterious and secretive old woman, who’s later is pity on by the town and others around her. But which before her father death he rejected men in her life that she loved. That drew the conclusion that she would never find a man beside her father .Over the …show more content…
He could be the narrator because he’s the only one who really knew Emily. Many people began to wonder why Emily started to look sick and question why she order poison. But as soon as she is never seen again many people began to suspect tobe could be the reason.

This later gives the affect that Tobe could be the narrator. To me he was the only character throughout the story who knew a lot about Emily. He knew about her flaws, her life, and most of all about her intentions with Homer. Tobe became the type of character that Faulkner kept secret throughout the story. These factors could draws many to the conclusion that Tobe is the speaker.

Although this could be true Tobe isn’t the narrator. Tobe could just be the symbol of multiply narrators. In the works of William Faulkner’s writing, he uses different types of tones and meanings to emphasize who the narrator is. In conclusion, based on what I have read and a lot of tone shift the narrator isn’t Tobe. The narrator is all the town’s people, everyone throughout the story branched out from what they knew about

There isn’t even a single named narrator who’s name we follow. Instead, it’s “our town.” My perspective on this is as if the town itself is telling the story, or one person is sharing multiple perspectives gleamed from rumors. Small towns tend to have a collective consciousness that narrates the story. As the daughter of the towns patron, Miss Emily kind belongs to the town.…

In most traditional works of literature, the existence of narration is both a crucial and mandatory element in order to fulfill the writer's purpose. Such works of literature include short stories and novels. The importance of the narrator goes beyond the act of simply telling a story that happens in a specific place at one particular point in time. Through the course of the years, famous writers have used the narrator as a tool to create suspense and force the audience to read the story from a specific point of view. Within this group of writers, William Faulkner and Charlotte Perkins Gilman have used the narrator to allow the reader to interpret the story from a desired point of view. Faulkner achieves this by using first person narrator…

Emily’s issues of abandonment and loneliness lead to her feeling as though she had no choice but to kill Homer so that she could not leave him. The reader knows that Emily is lonely in page two when the townsperson states that she had potential suitors who she clearly cared for left her. Following her father’s death the only way people knew she was alive was because her servant Tobe had been seen at the market. When Emily meets Homer her loneliness doubled with her mental instability told her that the only way she would not lose him would be if she were to kill him. Every person that Emily had ever loved left her at some point, including Homer when he briefly returned to New York. Rose For Emily Symbolism

There were many scenes in “A Rose for Emily” that closely relate to Faulkner’s life. I think Faulkner’s main idea for symbolism is Miss Emily, her actions, and her home. All three have played the main role in symbolizing what Faulkner was trying to point out. All the events in the story in my option point to the meaning to be to preserve Miss Emily’s past with Homer Barron. I think Miss Emily was afraid that she was going to lose him and rather that happen she would just live with his corpse for some forty years until her…
