Part I: Character Identification in "A Rose for Emily"

In complete sentence format, identify each of the following characters. Remember reporters, be sure to include as much information as possible to give your readers a vivid picture of each of the following characters:
1.Emily Grierson ~ Miss Emily is like a tragic figure that we can only look from the outside. She's an old-school southern belle trapped in a society bent on forcing her to stay in her role. She clings to the old even though she's trying to break free; in the story she dies alone in her haunted house. It gives us an understanding that to others she was an outcast and even at thirty-something she is already a murderer.

2.Colonel Sartoris ~ The colonel was the guy who thought up the plan to help Emily get her tax exempt after her father died, however it only backfired making the townspeople consider Emily more of an outcast.

3.Tobe~ Tobe is described to be the "old man-servant," in the story. He is an even more mysterious character than Emily, and ironically, probably the only one who knows the answers to all the mysteries in the story. Tobe was Miss Emily's servant and he have taken care of her since they were kids. We do not know what relationship he and Emily actually had whether there was love involved, however there was any sign that they were abusing their positions.

4.Judge Stevens~ Mr. Stevens was the one who raised the question of why the townspeople did not notice the stink until now and it have been two years. In my opinion what he meant was that they all should've have known about Emily and should've just kicked her out of the town. However I still cannot wrap my head around this character just what is his role in this story.

5.Homer Barron ~ Homer was the man that Emily murdered. In the story Homer was involved with Emily, he was about to propose to her but is convinced otherwise because of her weird cousins and the town. There is also a suspicion that on

The story starts by giving a lot of information on the house and town Miss Emily lived in along with the details about her life and death. When reading the story a person can tell that this is written by someone who lives in the town and knows of the family. The narrator has possibly been around for a number of years. The protagonist seems to be Emily in this story because of the chain of events she has endured leading to her mental instability. The narrator also gives information about the mental state of her family. The narrator described Emily when she started getting interested in boys by saying, "So when she got thirsty and was still single, we were not pleased exactly, but vindicated; even with insanity in the family she wouldn't have turned down all of her chances if they had really materialized" (Faulkner 93). This statement lets the audience know that the narrator has knowledge about Miss Emily's family and their past mental illnesses.…

In the short story "A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner, Miss Emily was a classic outsider who controlled and limited the town to access her true identity and she did this by remaining hidden and away from everyone. She was a very muted and mysterious person. Emily lived a very hard life being under control of her father until his death. The townspeople of Jefferson were also people who kept their eyes out for her as well. Emily was the type of person who was set in her ways and she did not want to listen to what others had to say. In the begin of the story the towns people are telling us about Emily. The main rumors that the town creates were why Miss Emily lived in her house for forty years without going out. They started to report her life according of the observations that they made while they pass-through her house. They saw her sometimes at the windows, other times the Negro that only goes out with the market basket give them some information. But after she killed Homer Barron they stopped talking about her. So the town started to think that he was not communicating with anyone not even with Miss Emily. The town was the narrative of Miss Emily life. They tell everything they see and know. Sometimes they just create a story so they can imagine what is happening in Miss Emily’s life. Homer is an outsider in the town, so he wouldn't necessarily be as nervous about getting involved with Emily, as he should be. Since he's both an outsider and a northerner, no one among the townspeople will enlighten him. And, since he's an outsider and a northerner, he's doubly at risk because his disappearance goes unnoticed and unreported until far too late. And…

Introduction Emily was the talk of the town; everything she did was put into the gossip circle. She might have been disclosed if she would have communicated with the town. Her life was always being talked about and the whole town knew what she was thinking when she was outside but the minute she stepped inside she was only the person being speculated about. From the time of he fathers death to the time of her death she was the only person held on a throne so that people would have someone always to talk about. She was insane but her love for Homer was real and the town realized that. I think her father also realized that she was insane but it can be only speculated. Her father and maybe her great aunt Wyatt because everyone knew that her aunt was crazy but maybe the town thought it might have skipped a generation.…
