Part I: Character Identification in "A Rose for Emily"
1. Emily Grierson- Emily is secretive and distant neighbor of the town. No one knows much about her and the town’s people are intrigued by how mysterious she is. Also they begin spreading rumors and speculation about her through observation. During her funeral the townspeople entered her house and found out she murdered Homer. She is known to be stubborn and traditional.
2. Colonel Sartoris- Colonel was the former mayor of the town. He fabricated a myth about her father to exempt her from paying bills. He is shown to be two-faced by his kind act and his law against African American women not being allowed in public without an apron.
3. Tobe- He is an African American servant of Emily. Tobe is the only one to know about Emily personal secrets. He is loyal shown to the fact that he never reveal any information about Emily and took care of her until her death.
4. Judge Stevens- The new mayor of the town. He does not suspect Emily of anything and sprinkle lime around the house with a group of men to eliminate the scent.
5. Homer Barron- He is a northerner and love interest of Emily Grierson. Many of the townspeople are indifferent of him and distrust because he is from the north. Despite this he is considered charming and charismatic. He is also foul mouthed.
Part II: "A Rose for Emily" - Analysis and Discussion
1. An example of local color is Emily house which is stylized as a southern house. Another example is Emily southern characteristics.
2.Her status was considered rich and extravagant in the past but, decline as the south has changed while she does not conform and stay with her traditional house.
3.I believe the cause of smell could possibly be from murder or a tragic accident. I believe this because the body could give off the disgusting smell and Emily is an enigma to the townspeople.

    The short story starts out describing Emily and the home her father left to her, after his passing. The town’s people refer to this home as smelling very bad “it smelled of dust and disuse- a close, dank smell” (Faulkner 31). Many people living near Emily complain about this smell and speak to the judge of the town about it. The judge’s remarks are “it’s probably just a snake or a rat the nigger of hers killed in the yard” (Faulkner 32). The judge tries to take care of the issue by having a few men of the town go to Emily’s house and “they broke open the cellar door and sprinkled lime there, and in all the out buildings” (Faulkner 32). However, sadly this does not take care of the problem. The author makes it very clear that the smell is very bad and it is out of the ordinary for it to be this strong. Emily Grierson – When she died, the entire town went to her funeral for two reasons. 1: The men went through a short of respectful affection for the fallen monument and 2: the women out of curiosity to see the inside part of Emily’s house. Emily’s boyfriend that soon to be husband left her and she became depressed and stopped taking care of herself and her home. She also stopped paying taxes because she didn’t go out much but stayed mostly inside her house. Her father mostly ran her life and he never approved any guy to be worthy to marry his daughter so Emily didn’t get married. 2. Colonel Sartoris- Colonel Sartoris is the Mayor of the former town.
