Chapter 1 - Gene goes to revisit the high school that he attending during World War II. Gene then arrives at the tree that made him come back to the school which makes him think about Finny and the time when they became best friends. He recalls how he and Finny were the only ones who jumped into the river from the tree and how they were friends because they could match each other.
Chapter 2 - Finny informs Gene that there was a bombing in Central Europe. A teacher comes by Gene and Finny’s dorm room to reprimand them but Finny uses his talking to get out of it. The boys go the Headmaster’s Tea where Finny and Mr. and Mrs. Patch-Withers discuss the situation in Central Europe. Mr. Patch-Withers notices that Finny is using the Devon tie as a belt and Gene prepares himself for the excitement as he sees no escape for Finny but Finny ends up talking his way out yet again. The boys make a pact and as they are about to jump from the tree into the river, Gene loses his balance but is saved by Finny.
Chapter 3 - Finny and Gene begin to expand the Super Suicide Society of the Summer Session as Charter Members and they add their friends as trainees.
