As seen when he claims, “It’s perfectly fine if you don’t believe in these ‘superstitions.’ In fact, it’s better than fine- it’s perfect. Because no matter what you believe, fukú believes in you,” Yunior makes it very clear that the reader’s belief in the curse in unnecessary (5). In this, Yunior isolates fukú so that it dominates any competing factors, including the predisposed beliefs that the reader may have, making it the presiding power over his narrative. Also, by explicitly sharing his disregard for the reader’s belief in the curse, Yunior reaffirms the power and accountability he holds as the narrator of the story and asserts his belief in the vulnerability of history and narratives because they are susceptible to interpretation and distortion. Although the reader is able to decipher a story as they please, the narrator has selective dominion over what should and should not be included. This reality regarding the subjective nature of history, which is strengthened by inclusion of the supernatural curse, grants Yunior free reign over the portrayal of the deLeon family; he is able to use his own fantasies and imagination, rather than factual evidence, to devise his explanations for the events that he did not experience…

For instance, in the stories An Indian Father’s Plea, Two ways to belong in America, and Everyday Use, some characters in the stories chose to view the world based on their culture and others chose to change their culture identity. A person's culture does influence the way they view the world, but at the same time it doesn’t because in the essay An Indian father’s Plea and in the short story Everyday Use, and the personal essay Two ways to belong in America their cultures didn’t influenced the way they view the world.…

The deep thoughts that dwell within one’s psyche are often the expectations, fears and aspirations that cause too much agitation to fully express. In Rudolfo Anaya’s, Bless Me, Ultima, the protagonist, Antonio Luna-Maréz, endures frequent dreams and nightmares that convey what he truly believes. Antonio’s eclectic subconscious thoughts are very often the catalyst for his future reactions and commonly predicts events sure to come. His dreams demonstrate who he truly is, rather than the hollow version of his self that was displayed to his family and friends; apart from his makeshift mentor, Ultima. In slumber, Antonio was truly awake.…

He questions if there are others gods that people believe in that he has never known before. In his dream, Antonio has been asked to forgive the sins of those who have turned away. He refuses, claiming that he is not a priest yet. They insist that he does it; for he has the blood of a Luna. As he attempts to touch their foreheads, they turn into animals. When he looks up, the Trementina Sisters, local witches and daughters of Tenorio, are there. They use Antonio to make an unknown potion. When the potion is finished, the sisters drink it, and Antonio becomes cursed. He dies, and is upset, because he died without ever taking the Eucharist. While lying there, Antonio remarks, “A long, dark night came upon me in which I sought the face of God, but I could not find Him. Even the Virgin and my Saint Anthony would not look at my face” (175). Antonio fears that he will not go to Heaven because of the curse laid upon him. In the dream, after he has died, Antonio’s entire family is murdered. Antonio begins to wonder why God would just let such bad things happen to good people. Antonio continues to question if there are other gods and why Ultima’s powers were stronger than those of a priest. He is confused and does not know if God in which he believes is the most powerful. Antonio imagines his brothers talking to him during the night. They ask Antonio to help them, but he claims that he has no…

It was a scorching hot October day in Palatine, Illinois. As my team and I warmed up for our cross country race we could feel the sun fry us. The Palatine Meet of Champions is always a competitive meet and this was the last time I would toe the line there. I was nervous. Thoughts started rushing through my head and I tried to stay calm. As the day went on, it was time to go to the line and start the race. Right before the gun went off;, I took a deep breath and closed my eyes. I visualized success. The gun went off and I bolted for the bottleneck. As we came to the last mile, I was in great position. I started making my way to the front and I felt like I was flying. Although I did not win, I placed fifth against many nationally ranked runners. I felt like I was on top of the world. At that moment I knew I wanted to pursue the dream of running collegiately. Later that week, I received a call from Coach Chorny from Miami University telling me that he would like me to run as a RedHawk. I was hooked after my official visit and later that month, I signed my letter of intent. My journey was set to continue.…

Talfud once said that, “Men see in their dreams only that what is suggested by their own thought.” In Bless Me Ultima, the passage after Narciso’s death is crucial in understanding that Antonio processes his conflicts in his dreams. This passage is key for the understanding that Antonio’s dreams are his way of processing his conflict between the Catholic God and the Golden Carp. With the processing of Antonio’s conflicts, Anaya uses extremely vivid imagery to help us understand the meaning of this passage…
