The main characters are brave and determined. Lewis is determined and refuses to give up. Clark is brave and is extremely optimistic. The Indians are wary, but most turn out to be friendly. Sacagawea is helpful.
The plot begins when Lewis and Clark need supplies, so Lewis sets out to trade with some of the natives. When he shouts to greet them, he says the wrong thing. He says, “Enemy,”
not “White men.” The Indians run away. Then Lewis finds a few Shoshone women and gives them gifts. Then they all head to the Indian village.
When they are close to the village, the Indians rush at them, because the Indians think they are the enemy. Surprisingly the women, who like the gifts, save the white men by showing the warriors the gifts the explorers had given them. The warriors retreated but were still wary. The climax occurs when Clark and Sacagawea arrive. Because the chief turns out to be Sacagawea’s brother, they are gladly welcomed. The chief helps them greatly with supplies for their expedition.
The best part of the story is when Sacagawea returns to her people and is welcomed by the chief, her brother. The plot twists create amazing suspense. For example, what will happen when Lewis and Clark get to the Indian village? Why did Lewis drop his gun? What will happen when the women show the warriors the gifts they were given.? Why were the warriors wary? The theme of the story is to never give up and to accept help when you need to. In 1803, Lewis and Clark completed their 3,000-mile journey because they persevered and accepted the help of the Indians. “A Successful Expedition” is a suspenseful, excellent history about one of the greatest travel adventures of all time.
