Daniel L. Shafer, author of Anna Madgigine Jia Kingsley, African Princess, Florida Slave, Plantation Slaveowner, traveled to Europe, the Caribbean, and West Africa to research. Shafer gave an account of Anna Kingsley’s life, who he explains to be and African “princess”. He shares the struggles that she endured once being an enslaved African American to becoming a free woman and plantation owner. The book was very interesting but I felt lacked first hand evidence of Anna Kingsleys life. Anta Majigeen Ndiaye (Anna Kingsley) was taken from her home in Senegal.…

This book was set in 1959, meaning segregation was still prevalent. For a white family of six to travel deep into the Congo during this time was unthinkable. As each member of the family develops a negative outlook on their new surroundings, Adah is quickly becoming intrigued with the Congo's culture. When the Price family expresses their uncertainty of their new home, Adah says to herself "And so the Price family passes its judgements. All but Adah. Adah unpasses her judgements. I am the one who does not speak" (32). I find this to be one of the most compelling aspects of Adah. The way she doesn't conform with even her family in a place that she is hardly accustomed to.…

He does not assist anyone in any way. Jewel, and Tull are risking their lives going back in the water to retrieve Cash’s tools, and he is acting like nothing is happening. This shows how unfather-like he is, and how he thinks he is entitled to do nothing since he is the father, and should be leading, but is actually being a dreadful father. With all his imperfections as a father, his children see him as an unloyal person, and show no respect for him anymore. On top of Dewey Dell’s father betraying the family, Addie, her mother, is also at fault for committing acts of betrayal. Addie, for example, is a character who betrays her other kids in the novel, including Dewey Dell. Addie betrays the whole family by making her other children do Jewel’s work when he is “sick”. They later find out that Jewel is so tired all the time because he would leave at night and go work for Mr. Quick in order to buy his new horse, not for the reasons they thought. Men’s repeated abandonment of women in Song of Solomon shows that the novel’s female characters suffer a double burden. Not only are women oppressed by racism, but they must also pay the price for men’s freedom. Guitar tells Milkman that black men are the unacknowledged workhorses of humanity, but the novel’s events imply that black women more correctly fit this description. The scenes that describe women’s abandonment show that in the novel, men bear responsibility only for themselves, but women are responsible for themselves, their families, and their communities. For instance, after suffering through slavery, Solomon flew home to Africa without warning anyone of his departure. But his wife, Ryna, who was also a slave, was forced to remain in Virginia to raise her twenty-one children alone. Also, after Guitar’s father is killed in a factory accident, Guitar’s grandmother has to raise him and his siblings. Although she is elderly and ill, she supports her children financially, intellectually, and emotionally.…
