AVID Personal Statement
As a child, I’ve been told I was quite inquisitive and creative. My imagination was just like any other child, but my pretend world was vast and extended throughout my youth, as a whole. I guess one could say that I’ve never stopped imagining. As I get closer and closer to my academic goals, I can now imagine myself as that English teacher in South Korea, or that social worker who gave a child a better life, or even a content creator who makes art films. These are all my dreams, and with some help, I will make them a reality.

Being brought up with a humble background had a lot to do with my ambition. I understand struggle, and know the feeling of inadequacy. With the image of my parents hard work and tears stained in my peripheral vision, my finish line has always been

A fairly basic question, but when pondered upon, utterly onerous to answer. At the mere age of seven, second grade Chataquoa Nicole Mason wrestled with this thought too, when asked by her teacher. The now 41 year old middle class citizen wasn’t raised with as much privilege and ease as most of us had. Tended to by teenage parents struggling with poverty, Mason was neglected of the luxuries some of her peers possessed, including food.…

Throughout my entire life, I have found that hard work and dedication can help me achieve any goal that I set. I have overcome the separation and lack of decent parents, incarceration of my oldest brother, and many other events with the morals and skills that were taught to me by my grandparents (who are my legal guardians). Due to their influence and love, I have always put my best foot forward and looked at the world with optimism. Since the second grade, I have been in gifted/honor courses, exceeded through my classes, and have made many friends. My backbone does not consist of selfish desires or influences; it consists of my morals and the family and friends that I do have pushing me to change the world.…

At a young age, I’ve always been an artsy and creative person. In art class, I’d always have something good to show. During my freshman year, I felt as if I wasn’t living up to my own potential so I had begged my dad to take me out of Willingboro High and enroll me into Burlington County Institute of Technology or, BCIT. When filling out my exploration papers, I was dead set on getting…

Throughout the course of my junior year, I have been challenged to be the best artist of my ability. As a graphic designer, I have learned to view things in a different light and learned to express my creativity. Although I am still learning new things everyday about how to become a better artist, I have improved tremendously in every way ranging from the thought process all the way to finalizing each project, and I think that as the days go by I will continue to do well in my high school graphic design career, but in continuing my education in this major and working in a field closely related to it. I have produced at least 5 projects that reflect my passion for graphic design including the New York World’s Fair, currency recreation, and the handmade film poster from the first semester of my junior year and from the second half up until my most recent project, a book jacket, and an organic drink package design.…

I never thought this day would come as fast as it did. I feel like this year is just going to fly by and the next thing I know I’ll be packing to go to college, but let me not get ahead of myself. I remember always being asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” The funny thing is, I’ve always known. I’ve always wanted to be a teacher. I can look back to my younger years and remember playing teacher, writing out worksheets, teaching classes with my cousins. It’s something I always enjoyed.…

The idea that an individual is capable of reaching any dream that they wish for, so long as they strive to the best of their ability, is one commonly shared. Parents are known to encourage their children by sharing the concept that by working hard you can achieve anything. However, an individual is not necessarily capable of achieving any goal they wish; we have all been limited as human beings and have a certain capacity to achieve. Through the wide collection of stories and accounts in ‘Inquiry: Questioning, Reading, Writing’ by Bloom, White and Borrowman and other supporting texts, it is evident that hard work does not enable an individual to be anything they want to be.…

Fortunately, by the fifth grade my parents were able to rent an apartment nearby our school and had found jobs in multiple Brownsville restaurants. After the move, things became much easier and we were able to have a much simpler life, though we were never able to forget the hardships we experienced and the effort we put into enhancing our lives. Today, I am sure my successes as of now are gratifying my parents as I am in the top 10% of my class, the Co-Captain of the Golden Stars Dance Team, member of the National Honor Society, Piano Club, HOSA, and in TRIO UTRGV talent search program. I attend rigorous AP classes to improve my opportunity to attend a university and have the finest future I can give myself. Although my triumphs may not look like much to most, I can assertively say that the trial of going through difficulty to have a superior future has been overcome with the comfort of focus, strength, and the right set of mind to build a better tomorrow for my family and…

Seeing both my parents work to attain the glorious idea of the American Dream not only for themselves but for myself and my siblings, I have learned tenacity and compassion. Tenacity to push forward through the difficulties of juggling school, work, internship, and extra-curricular activities to pursue my unconventional dreams. Compassion in understanding that life deals misfortune, and it is in helping others to overcome it that one overcomes adversity himself. While my perseverance and compassion for others seems to lead me in the direction of the medical field, unfortunately for my parents, I am far from it. I seek to aid others and myself in this perilous journey through life not by ensuring good health, but through education in museums. I believe that art and the humanities is worth learning and worth teaching. Although the career path I have chosen for myself is a gamble, it is worth the risk. Because after all, I would not be where I am today had my parents not taken a leap of…

A friend recently told me “Don’t let the things you can’t control, control you”. I realized how much this small piece of advice relates to my life as an African American woman. I can’t control the fact that I don’t live with- or even know- my father. I can’t control how society perceives people of color. But I control what I do. I have discovered that I embody the ability to beat the odds given to a black, fatherless girl. I can be who I want to be with hard work and determination.…

Growing up I always thought to myself, I wish I was older, but now that I am older I keep wishing I was younger. Along with growth comes change. My life had changed in many aspects, from the books that I read to the dreams that I form. The books that I have read had taught me that in order to achieve your dreams you have to forget about the past, remain in the present and continue to think about the future. Reading these books have temporarily taken me out of my world and placed me along side with the cunning thieves, and heroic maidens. I have the invincible feeling that no matter what I want to do it will be possible. They have taught me that you need to form realistic dreams, but to never be afraid to expand once you reach them. Since I was a little girl I have always wanted to be a veterinarian and to attend UC Davis, as I grew up the books…

    Where Am I Going?

Sometimes I see myself as a child, and the world is my playground. I aim to walk barefoot around it, mindless of the stains. I know I’m not always on the mountain top, nor above water, but it won’t hurt if I dream a little, will it? So I still want to clench my fists on things that are quite impossible to some people, but are possible to me. I dream of travelling to different parts of the world, meet different people, know their culture, experience their traditions, keep all these memories in a journal and preserve people’s smiles in photographs. I never dreamt of seeing my parents cry, but it would be fulfilling to see them shed a tear, as I march out of the Arch of the Centuries together with other Thomasians, graduating on time. I dream of having a sunflower garden at the back of my home, and I would take care of it as much as I would take care of my own family. I dream of hard work finally paying off, and happiness continuously radiating. I dream a lot of dreams, but these dreams aren’t just dreams. They’re goals, and in 10 years, these goals will become dreams once again. Dreams that will be, if not already, coming true.…

My father had turned down the radio, and out of the blue asked, “Amanda, Anna…What do you want to do after high school?” My sister went first, describing her love for art. She went on to explain that is all she can see herself doing, before he responded it was my turn to answer. Of course, I knew the answer. “Music.” Music was my reply to the question. I wanted to be the one taking vocal lessons, and living my dream out as a singer.…

Being a girl that loves attention and being the life of the party, like myself, someone wouldn’t think to ask “what do you aspire to be” in a typical conversation.
