Why do we associate such visible movements with life? A possible answer is that we think of movement as a response to a change in the environment of the organism. The cat may be running because it has seen a mouse. Not only that, we also think of movement as an attempt by living organisms to use changes in their environment to their advantage. Plants grow out into the sunshine. Children try to get pleasure and fun out of swinging. Buffaloes chew cud to help break up tough food so as to be able to digest it better. When bright light is focussed on our eyes or when we touch a hot object, we detect the change and respond to it with movement in order to protect ourselves.
If we think a bit more about this, it becomes apparent that all this movement, in response to the environment, is carefully controlled. Each kind of a change in the environment evokes an appropriate movement in response. When we want to talk to our friends in class, we whisper, rather than shouting loudly. Clearly, the movement to be made depends on the event that is triggering it. Therefore, such controlled movement must be connected to the recognition of various events in the environment, followed by only the correct movement in response. In other words, living organisms must use systems providing control and

Gawande postulates whether medicine is a craft or industry, with craft being about perfection, and industry being about safety and reliability. Gawande’s view is black and white, should be a craft where if you can do forceps you do that and you perfect c-section if you can do that. Gawande’s view leads to a reliance in c-sections. A system could easily be developed in residency to deem wheter obstetricians are ready for forceps to allay Gawande’s concerns about inexperience.…

Throughout reading Chapter 8, Perceiving Motion, I learned how we typically act in our daily lives. As humans, we are constantly acting, either dramatically such as riding a bike or routinely, as in reaching for a coffee cup or walking across the room. Whatever form of action takes, it involves motion, and one of the things that makes the study of motion perception fascinating and challenging is that we are not simply passive observers of the motion of others, we often move ourselves. We as well perceive motion while being stationary, as when watching someone cross the street. Motion perception has many different functions, ranging from helping us perceive things such as shapes of objects to providing us with updates about what is happening.…

The hypothalamus will send a signals in skin which of the Krause (hot) or Ruffini (cold) are appropriately activated , and sweat glands is activated to release sweat so that the temperature in the body will appropriately response back to normal either decreasing or increasing. The sensitivity in our skin is because of the receptor including pain and touch. One of the human sense has is the touch or somatosensory system. Our bodies react appropriately to changes that occur in the environment during our day-to-day activities. When responding, an external stimulus has to be detected by one or more neurons. These then send this sensory information to the nervous system where processing occurs. If a motor signal is started, it usually involves a number of action potentials, which lead to muscle contraction and movement of other parts of the body in reaction to that external stimulus. For example, loud sounds or anything flying at close proximity to your eyes makes one blink while tapping the tendon which is under the knee cap produces a knee jerk reflex (Bessière et al., 2008).…

Vikram Seth is a famous Indian poet, novelist, travel writer, librettist, children’s writer, biographer and memoirist. He was born on June 20, 1952 in Calcutta, now known as Kolkata. His father, Prem Seth, was an employee of the Bata India Limited shoe company. His mother was the first woman judge of the Delhi High Court, as well as the first woman to become Chief Justice of a state High Court, known as Shimla High Court. His childhood was spent in the town of Batanagar near Calcutta, Patna, and London. He has a younger brother, Shantum, and a younger sister, Aradhana. Seth admits that some of the fictional characters in his novels are “drawn from real life,” in comparison to his parents and siblings. Although discreet at times, he is not secretive about his personal life. He admits that the “I” in many of his poems is in reference to himself. His poems are addressed to both male and female objects. “Some men like Jack and some like Jill…What is my status? Stray? Or Great?” are quotes taken from the poem Dubious, which shows him being open about his sexuality. He attended The Doon School in Dehadrun, where he admits to his “terrible feeling of loneliness and isolation,” during his studies. He also attended Oxford University, where he took his undergraduate degree in philosophy, politics, and economics. He was enrolled at Stanford University, as well as Nanjing University for his intended doctoral dissertation on Chinese population planning. “The Golden Gate” (1986), was his first novel. He has written a travelogue “From Heaven Lake: Travels Through Sinkiang and Tibet” (1983). His works in poetry include All You Who Sleep Tonight (1990). He has also written a story book for children Beastly Tales from Here and There (1992).…
