Elizabeth Proctor is a kind, caring woman who loves God and has never strayed from the path of the lord. Abigail Williams is a girl who has disobeyed at least three of the Ten Commandments of the lord most notably thou shan’t lie and thou shan’t covet thy neighbor’s wife or husband. Goody Proctor is falsely accused of witchcraft whereas Abigail is the one going left and right accusing people of being a witch. What most people don’t realize is that Abigail wanted John Proctor for herself and would do anything to do so. Elizabeth has done nothing wrong in the town of Salem yet everyone believes the voice of a 12 year old girl. To summarize the story, John Proctor is a man of god.…
People are products of their environment and Abigail’s environment had shaped her into an emotional, unstable young girl. Consider this, her parents’ death created her need for attention and love, a need that John Proctor met for her. Consequently, when he betrayed her, she was driven into a temporary insanity. In the beginning she had no intent to involve witchcraft, but instead wanted everything to go back to normal, avoid conflict. But when she saw there was no escape from her actions, she embraced it so she would not be to blame, using it as a scapegoat for her actions that were frowned upon by the strict Puritan society. With this intention, one lie built upon another, each lie told in an attempt to accomplish some hidden agenda, despite the consequences others would face for her mistakes. One lie to explain her behavior, another to kill Goody Proctor, a third to stop Marry Warren from telling the truth, etc. Therefore, when all her lies came crashing down around her and her credibility was questioned, she felt there was no other choice but to face her reality and flee before she was hung herself. Victimized by her own immature choices that she felt were forced upon her, Abigail was driven by her own lack of self-love and desperate need for attention created by her parent’s death and those within the…
Abigail Williams, a character from The Crucible, is a misfit archetype. A misfit archetype describes a character who doesn’t fit in with their community and surroundings. These types of characters can often display an attitude of freedom. I chose the misfit archetype for Abigail Williams because she fits into it very well. To begin with, Abigail was found conjugating with Tituba and other girls in the woods. She is also a misfit because she starts accusing fellow citizens of being witches. Arthur Miller wrote a novel called The Crucible, with a character named Abigail Williams, who fits the misfit archetype that can be connected to 21st century, the time period that The Crucible takes place, and characters, both in The Crucible, and in other novels.…
In the story “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller, there are many dramatis personas that are significant. Two very significant characters in the crucible are Abigail and Elizabeth. Elizabeth is married to John proctor and Abigail throughout the story tries to seduce and have an affair with him. This shows that Elizabeth, however, is better than Abigail because good people are able to identify with her, they fight for proctors love in different ways, and they both drive the plot of good versus evil.…
The Crucible was a controversial piece of literature by Arthur Miller. The main character Abigail Williams demonstrates that Unjust people or pride will attempt to break them down by pointing fingers, turning Salem people against each other, running away, and stealing money from her Uncle “Reverend Parris” to defend her mistakes. Abigail is in love with John Proctor, whom she has an affair with. John is married to Elizabeth and when she finds out that John is sleeping with another woman, Abigail, she fires her from being their maid. Abigail's hates Elizabeth’s guts, she will do anything to get rid of her and have John all to herself. Abigail came up with this idea if Elizabeth is out of the picture, maybe then her and John could be together.…
She was then taken in by Reverend Parris, her uncle, and was able to find employment in the Proctor household, which led to the development of the conflict in The Crucible. Abigail was sent away from the Proctor household after Elizabeth found out about the lecherous acts between Abigail and John Proctor. The build up of experiences, from the murder of her parents up until the first act probably led her to the current disposition she is in during the play. She easily prioritizes her own desires at the expense of others, even going to the extent of cursing Elizabeth Proctor during prior to the first act and, later on, blaming Elizabeth Proctor for practicing witchcraft. Abigail Williams does not seem to be bound by moral standards, as seen in her continuing active participation in the witch hunt and conviction of a number of Salem's citizens. Her knack for mischief develops further towards the third act, when Mary Warren came forward with the claim that she had lied about being afflicted by supernatural forces. This statement could have displaced the previous accusations that Abigail and her friends had given in the past. Abigail, recognizing the possibility of being imprisoned for deceiving the court, started acting as if Mary Warren had cast her spirit on Abigail and her friends. Mischief turned into vengeance at this point, when the girls were too deep into their lie that self-preservation and hatred towards those endangering that self-preservation fueled their…
Abigail Williams is a seventeen year old orphan, who cares more about herself than others and she values John Proctor. All throughout this book Abigail was doing multiple selfish things, trying to avoid herself getting into trouble. She lied about her and a group of girls practicing witchcraft in the forest. She also never told that she drunk blood in order to kill Elizabeth Proctor. John Proctor's wife, Elizabeth Proctor, said “I think she see another meaning in that blush.” Elizabeth knows that Abigail has something more like a special feeling about John…
Abigail Williams is the force behind the tragedy in the town of Salem. She was the one who started the lies about witchcraft, and she also got the lives of innocent people taken for false accusations and lies. Throughout the book, Abigail shows her demonic ways by manipulating, lying, stealing, and threatening the lives of people. “Shut up! All of you. We danced. That is all, and mark this, if anyone breathe a word or the edge…
Winona Ryder’s statement about Abigail Williams’ character is very controversial. I believe, unlike Ryder, that Abigail was indeed a villain. Much like her friends, Abigail loved being the “talk of the town.” Once Abigail realized she was receiving attention from the town, she found ways to keep it by accusing people of witchcraft. In Act 1, Abigail says, “...I saw Sarah Good with the Devil! I saw Goody Osburn with the Devil! I saw Bridget Bishop with the Devil!” This proves that Abigail made many false accusations against other townspeople to keep the attention on herself. On the other hand, some might believe that Abigail is innocent. People claim that Abigail and her friends are doing it for fun and games at first, but not long after,…
To begin with, Abigail Williams starts the accusations of witchcraft in order to fulfill her ulterior motives. We first see hints of her motives when Abigail tells John Proctor, a married man under whom she had worked that, “I am waitin’ for you every night”(1099). While Abigail worked under John and Elizabeth Proctor, she had developed feelings for John. Elizabeth removes her from the house, which angers Abigail deeply. Proctor and Abigail see each other again when John goes to retrieve his maid Mary Warren. We can infer that Abigail continues to have for feelings for…
I agree with Winona Ryder when she says Abigail Williams is the villian. Why I think this is because a lot of trouble and also a lot of drama was created by her. Abigail Williams first off is a bad person because she threatens people and uses power. Secondly she threatens all these people without second guessing which shows she is evil. Thirdly she accused people of things that they didn't do. Such as accusing Elizabeth proctor of something she didn't do. That shows she wanted bad for others and tried to take the easy way out of things. Finally she was a bad person because she just caused problems all around and was a negative in the…
Abigail is the reason that the mess of the witch trials got started in The Crucible. In the first act of the play after Tituba confessed to committing witchcraft, Abigail started to blame other people for using witchcraft. Abigail started the her first accusations by saying, “I want to open myself! They turn to her, startled. She is enraptured, as though in a pearly light. I want the…
One of the main characters of the play The Crucible, Abigail Williams, is the most spiteful and least complex character throughout the entire play. She is the villain of the play, even more than Parris or Danforth. She is on the lower end of the social hierarchy; the only people below her were slaves like Tituba. Abigail Williams possess wicked character traits that give her a negative perception. She is a jezebel figure who lacks feelings, an immoral character who lacks ethics and a manipulative person who lacks a conscience.…
The Crucible by Arthur Miller is a play that takes place in 1692 in the small Massachusetts village of Salem. Salem is a Puritan community; they are a very restrictive society with strong beliefs. They believe in hard work and prayer, therefore they consider material and sexual desires unnatural and evil. Abigail Williams, the main character is the reason for the witch trials that begin in Salem. She is dishonest, manipulative and her seductive ways is what makes her the antagonist of this play.…
Abigail Williams is the niece of Reverend Samuel Parris in Arthur Miller’s book the Crucible. Some people may think she’s just a normal girl but how can people be sure about that? Abigail Williams, age 17, is indeed a young girl, but she’s also an evil villain. Throughout the book, there are many examples to show how this is true. Abigail makes up lies to get what she wants, to get out of trouble, and to manipulate others. She also attempts a homicide just because she’s jealous. These are the details that will be examined in this essay.…
