Honor: How far can it go? In today’s modern world, the idea of “honor” is very different than it once was many years ago. In the time of the Napoleonic wars, one soldier's honor was everything. A man in arms did everything he could possibly do to preserve his honor, even if it meant death. Even into the time of the early 1900’s, honor was still prevalent, as seen in the Titanic, as the captain held his honor and went down with the ship. But in today’s society, one would not see this level of action taken to preserve honor. Honor has been a recurring theme among many great novels. The story begins the morning of the murder, as Santiago Nasar is preparing for his day in the town of Colombia during the 1950’s. On the day that Bayardo San Roman is to marry Angela Vicario, Bayardo finds out that Angela is not a virgin as she had said. Out of jealousy and hatred, Bayardo inquires that the man who did this was Santiago Nasar. Bayardo returns Angela home, where she is beaten, and Bayardo and Angela’s brother set out to find Santiago. On this very day, the bishop is to come to the town and bless the marriage between Angela and Bayardo, which seems to distract from the murder. But as the Vicario brothers tell the people of the town of their soon to be action, none of the town's members warn Santiago. Near the end of the book, it is found out that the murder did take place, and that as a result, the Vicario family has left the town of Colombia due to the disrespect that has come over the family due to the actions of some of the family members. The Vicario brothers are sentenced to jail for three years and Bayardo escapes from town. The book ends with the true retelling of the murder of Santiago
