The 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln a historic leader that accomplished so much to make the nation a better Union. His leadership, determination and perseverance is what made him one of the best presidents in United States history. He was also well remembered for his famous Quotes, speeches, letters and great accomplishments in difficult times. He was known for the laws signed under his time as president. Abraham Lincoln before being recognized for who he was had a job at a store selling stake. Also, in the Black Hawk War of 1832 he was enrolled as a militia captain. He did not step foot in the battlefield though. He developed a good policy and strong moralities for his men. His men well respected and followed his commands. In Civil War Trust, it states, ”Stepping in front of their raised muskets, Lincoln is said to have challenged his men to combat for the terrified native's life. His men stood down.”(source4). This shows he was a strong leader and in other words, his men truly supported there captain and would do as told. After the war he began to study law. He ran for a spot on Illinois State Legislature but lost in the election. He continued to run until he finally wins a spot as a Whig in 1834. Abraham Lincoln was a self educated lawyer and in 1836 he goes on to passing the bar examination. He goes to Springfield and works as a lawyer there. In Springfield Abraham Lincoln meets Mary Todd. In 1982 he married her and with time they have four Children. All four of their kids were boys; Thomas, Robert, Edward, and William. Abraham Lincoln became a wealthy attorney and he buys a home for him and his family. Abraham Lincoln runs for the U.S. House of Representatives and wins in 1846. He served his term in Congress from 1847 to 1849. He was against the war with Mexico which made him lose followers/voters. He doesn't go back for the re-election campaign and returns home. There he continues to educate himself more about laws. In 1854 events occurred which made Abraham Lincoln interested in national politics once again. He goes on to join the Republican party. He has a disagreement / argument with Stephen A. Douglas, a Democrat, on the Kansas-Nebraska Act.
On 1854 May 30th, the Kansas-Nebraska Act was passed by Stephen A.
Douglas and The United States Congress. the Kansas-Nebraska Act allowed landowners with in Kansas and Nebraska to decide whether to allow slaves within their Land. The Kansas-Nebraska Act also was revoking the Missouri Compromise of 1820 which did not allow slavery within the northern side of the United States. Abraham Lincoln was anti-slavery in the north. He was also against the Kansas-Nebraska Act. So, in 1854 Abraham Lincoln had a big debate with Stephen A. Douglas on the Kansas-Nebraska Act violating the Declaration of Independence and was unconstitutional. Abraham Lincoln makes a run for the United States senate. He was not successful in this run. On July 16th 1858, Abraham Lincoln gave his well-known speech “divided house”. In the speech he talks about the nation going to to be divided into two. He felt this would affect the nation and the nation should stay as a whole all together, one nation. Abraham Lincoln then faces off against Stephen A Douglas in numerous famous debates and Lincoln loses the election. This election made him rise higher and he goes on to give another speech in New York. The Cooper Union speech was similar to the other speech about the nation and slavery. In 1860 Republican William Seward was favored for the presidential candidate. There were many other good candidates that could have ran for president. The republicans chose the lawyer with only one term experience in congress. This man was the one and only Abraham Lincoln.
In the presidential election Abraham Lincoln again goes head to head with no other than Stephen Douglas. Stephen Douglas was a democratic representative for the northern Democrats. The Democratic representative for the southern Democrats was John C. Breckinridge. He was the representative from Kentucky. Another candidate was John Bell who represented Constitutional Union party. Both John Breckinridge and John Bell were receiving votes from the south. Abraham Lincoln did not get a single vote from the south. However, the majority of his votes or coming from the North. Abraham Lincoln also had the Electoral College votes which helped him in the campaign. The Electoral College is made up of 538 voters. Each state is entitled the equal amount of voters as the number of Congressional delegation. So in the House of Representatives was on vote each member and the two Senators. He defeated all four men and became the 16th President of the United States.
Winning the presidential campaign was only the beginning for Abraham Lincoln. A year after he became the President the southerner felt the Republican Party would had more power than before. So, some southern states decide to secede from the union and from another one. They called it the Confederate States of America. The states that formed the Confederate were Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Georgia, Texas, Mississippi, and South Carolina. They were then joined by Tennessee, North Carolina, Arkansas, and Virginia later in time. This was the beginning of the Civil War.
On April 12th, 1861 was when the Civil War started in Fort Sumter, South Carolina. The Confederates fired at the union who was sent by Abraham Lincoln to supply Fort Sumter. This is how the civil starts. The leader of the confederate States of America was Jefferson Davis. Jeff Davis was a former secretary of War, and the euro in the Mexican War. Abraham Lincoln showed his great leadership early in the war as he learned quickly on war strategies,planning, maneuvers and schemes. He also has weapons being tested and promotion and advanced officers. Abraham Lincoln struggled in the battlefield even though he had these officers. George McAllen could not advance in the battle field. Burnside, Rosecrans, McDowell, Pope, and Buell also failed to to advance in the battle field. Abraham Lincoln had to remove them from command as they were not bringing him success. On the other side, Officer Robert Lee was the general for the Confederate States and was bring success to the Confederate army. In 1862 Lincoln’s Union had a victory over the Confederate States army in Antietam. Abraham Lincoln did what was needed in order to win the war and was criticized for it. After the war in Antietam, Abraham Lincoln's famous Emancipation Proclamation came in effect on January 1,1863. The Emancipation Proclamation was a document that any slave in the state should be free. This document also gave the blacks the right to fight with the union. This was also known as one of Abraham Lincoln's greatest achievements as President. Abraham Lincoln runs for his second term as president in 1864. During this time the war was still going on and he felt he wouldn't win because of war still happening. One thing that helped him in the re-election was his general commanding all of the Union armies. The man's name was Ulysses Grant. Ulysses Grant was bring success and victories to Abraham Lincoln. One of Abraham Lincoln's most famous speeches was only 2 minutes long. The speech was the Gettysburg address. The speech talked about the reasons for war and about human being treated equally. In March 4, 1865, in his second inauguration speech he said his goal was, “lasting peace among ourselves...malice towards none...charity for all.” (source3 16th President). This was the ending to the Civil War.

He established the Revenue Act of 1862 which was first income tax. This act was to pay for all the war cost. He also signed into law the homestead act. The homestead act was giving support to western settlements by giving settlers 160 acres of land. in addition, he signed the Morrill Act. The Morrill Act was donation of public land to several regions and other areas. this land was used to provide colleges that focused on Agriculture and Mechanic. Each area would receive 30,000 Acres of federal land for these colleges. In total there were sixty nine colleges funded by these lands. Another law signed by Abraham Lincoln was the National Bank Act. This act was made to create national banking systems. This act was also passed for the that this would help resolve the Financial expenses from the Civil War. Abraham Lincoln also created a national holiday. The holiday is Thanksgiving. He also created the Pacific Railroad act. The Pacific Railroad act also known as transcontinental railroad was the authorization of land to railroad companies.Railroads were being made throughout the United States for Transportation. One day in Washington D.c,. as Abraham Lincoln was seated in a theater watching a play he was shot by a Confederate sympathizer. The man that shot Abraham Lincoln was named John Wilkes Booth. He had shot Abraham Lincoln in the back of the head. He never gained conscious and was died the following morning on April 15, 1865. John Wilkes Booth felt he could get rid of the Northern government by assassinating Abraham Lincoln. He also did not agree with the freedom of slavery. He felt that the country was only for white people and blacks should stay as slaves.Therefore, He went to kill the man that had gave freedom to the slaves.
Abraham Lincoln's historical accomplishments was that he was a leader did everything he had in his power to keep the nation as one. To some he may have done some done some unconstitutional law breaking acts But he did it for a better nation. He did not want the nation to go down and separate into Union or Confederate.He will also be remembered as the man who ended slavery in the united states and for the Emancipation Proclamation. His strong Character, leadership, determination, and perseverance was what made him one of the greatest in history. Some presidents would see Abraham Lincoln as a role model. For his impact in the nation and keeping it as one nation.
