“College Pressures” written by William Zinsser is an essay about the pressures college students were facing back in 1979. These pressures are still relevant today and fit into just four categories which include economic, peer, self-induced, and parental. Zinsser went into detail with each category providing examples from his own experience and the experience of others as evidence. Out of all the different pressures addressed in the essay I would say that economic pressure is most limiting today.…

When one begins college, they may experience a whole new type of pressure that they have never felt before. One may feel the need to produce absolutely perfect work on all given assignments. This has become a new reality for college students that want to have a perfect score on every assignment, how much extra work they have done to improve their grades, and how many hours they have spent in the library just trying to get ahead. With college tuition going up each year, many students want to perform their best which could lead to better jobs and opportunities which can then help pay college debt. This is the new pressure that students are putting on themselves each and every day and many are afraid of falling behind in their work and will not…

This quotation is spoken by Mercutio to Romeo. Benvolio and Mercutio are trying to persuade Romeo to join them in a masquerade. Romeo is reluctant to to join them. He rather be alone with his love-sick misery about Rosaline not returning his love and Mercutio is trying to cheer up Romeo. This passage is significant because it shows Mercutio`s and Romeo`s deferring view of love. We see that Romeo is passionate, emotional, and embraces his sadness. He feels that love is rough because of his past experiences that dealt with love. On the other hand, Mercutio is practical, and thinks things thoroughly. “If love be rough with you, be rough with love: Prick love for pricking, and you beat love down”. This passage tells us that Mercutio believes that love can be controlled. Mercutio is basically saying that love can cause great pain, so you must take control over love. This statement also is personifying love of being rough with Romeo. He is telling Romeo that if love hurts him, he should hurt it back and defeat it. “Give me a case to put my visage in. A visor for a visor”! This statement tells us how Mercutio thinks he is an ugly person, thus asking for an ugly cover mask for an ugly face.…

Students apply unnecessary pressure on them by comparing themselves to their peers. Zinsser mentions that a student he calls Linda “who came in and said she was under terrible pressure because her roommate, Barbra was much brighter and studied all the time.” This student is a perfect example of making an unnecessary comparison which stresses her out. This pressure leads to students over work them-selves. “A professor will assign five-page papers”. “Several students will start writing ten-page papers to impress him.”(par.27). Instead of just following the guidelines of an assignment they are trying to shoot above and beyond the requirements. I can really relate to this pressure because I do add a lot of stress on myself. I immediately assume everyone is doing better than me which makes me work harder, but at the same time it causes me to over work myself. I have to make sure all my kids need are done, and then I stay up late to make sure all my school work is done. This pressure affects me negatively because I add a lot of stress on myself that does not need to be added. Instead of focusing on my growth academically. I am always worried about who is doing better than me in…

Pressure can affect people in positive and negative ways. Individuals can be pressured to do better, to broaden their horizons, and to generally make more informed decisions. Positive pressure can be seen as having a support system, and though it may be rigorous and even sometimes seen as nagging, is very helpful to those who otherwise would need a nudge in the right direction. More often than not, pressure causes people to do things they don't want to do. That causes some people to be very unhappy and miserable. They feel like the pressure that they have to face isn’t beneficial or even a waste of time. It is very difficult to do something you don’t have the desire to do.…

At the beginning of my first ever college class I was still a senior in high school, I had no idea what a professor wanted from me or how to undertake the extensive amount of weekly work. My first thought is to see how much my classmates are writing and to ask, “How many pages is yours?” I soon began to write to how much everyone else was writing instead of thinking about if I was giving the right information or not. It’s not about the length of a paper or the pre-writing, it’s about depth and giving the right information. Self-induced pressure causes students like myself to set higher standards than needed for their grades. Zinsser proclaims a very accurate statement, “A is for Admirable and B is for Borderline, even though, in Yale’s official system of grading, A means excellent and B means very good. Today, looking very good is no longer good enough.” (438). I have always been a student that anything below an A was disappointing to me. Up until my first college class I had to accept that a B was okay, it wasn’t easy after being a straight A student in high school.…

I kept my goals short-term, meaning within the next year or so, as I am on track to graduate in August of 2017. My first goal that I listed is to focus my upcoming courses around my future education and career goals. As we learned during Week 3 of this course, depending on the area of psychology one wishes to pursue there may be certain courses or certain skills that may be required. I intend to pursue a Master’s in School Counseling. While looking into the licensure requirements for my state I discovered that coursework is a vital part of obtaining a license (New York State Education Department (NYSED), 2015). I also learned what types of courses are currently set-up for the Master’s degree program in School Counseling here at Walden (Walden University, 2015). I feel that choosing courses that will help build a foundation for future courses is a good idea for me. In addition, I am interesting in trying to find an internship or a research opportunity although it is not a requirement for me to obtain my Bachelor’s degree. While pursuing my Associate’s degree I had the opportunity to do an internship and I feel that it helped me gain some real world experience. Landrum and Davis (2014) agree that internships offer a lot of benefits such as on-the-job experience and internships build confidence, (p. 110) to name a few. Landrum and Davis (2014) further point out that research experience closely related to your program of study is a huge plus on your application to graduate school (p. 94). Another goal I set for myself is to start applying for graduate school. I intend to start researching my options (my first choice, of course, is Walden) about a year in advance get all the information ready after that then about six months before I actually hope to start graduate school start sending out the applications. Lastly, I feel as though my APA citation skills…
