I can determine if a source is reliable by checking the date it was published, and by verifying its origin. The date is an important factor because I can see if the information was publicized recently or in the past. If the information is recent I have a higher chance that the continent will be based on recent findings or test and that the facts will be accurate. However, I do run the chance of false data because now a day’s people summarize into their own words the previous text and others plagiarize incomplete information, for me to actually think that I will be running the chance of considering their incomplete work will make me fail due to the fact that details that they did not find important and did not include would be the details that I need. If I do not verify thoroughly the date and continent I can be in the dean’s list. Another important factor is verifying the origin, if it’s a book I can easily find the information by looking where the text are classified such as a biography or a documentation, the type of book you need varies by the subject you are working with. Nevertheless the internet is a very different matter; a way that the origin can be determined is by the extension of the website. For example, if it’s educational it will be .edu; business can be .org, etc. By determining the extension I can make sure that I am working on a webpage that can support me with the right information.…

Anyone, in theory, can publish on the Web; therefore, it is imperative for users of the Web to develop a critical eye to evaluate the credibility of Internet information. Searching for sources on the WWW involves using a search engine, a directory, or some combination of these two. Because there is so much information on the Web, good and bad, finding what you want is not an exact science and can be time consuming. According to Nicholas C. Burbules, "....the Web is not an ordinary reference system; it poses some unique and, in many respects, unprecedented conditions that complicate the task of sorting out dependable from undependable information--and even complicates the notion that we have a clear sense of that distinction. How to differentiate credible from fraudulent information is not a new problem, but unraveling these in the context of a vast rapidly changing networked system is" (Paradoxes of the Web: The Ethical Dimensions of Credibility, Library Trends, Wntr 2001 v49 i3 p441, Introduction). Developing a keen sense of the credibility of sources, based on such clues as connection of author to the subject, audience, source of publication, and documentation of supporting evidence, can also help you evaluate print and other types of sources. Though many search engines rank material according to their idea of what is relevant, that doesn't mean the material is relevant to want you want or is reliable. These guidelines are to help you become familiar with various types of Web resources and the reliability of the information. 1. Is there any evidence that the author of the Web information has some authority in the field about which she or he is providing information? What are the author's qualifications, credentials and connections to the subject? 2. With what organization or institution is the author associated? Is there a link to the sponsoring organization, a contact number and/or address or e-mail…

There is much debate concerning the validity and reliability of Wikipedia. The internet has transformed the way we gather and learn information. Fifteen years ago, we had internet access, but not to the extent we do today. Even in the 1990’s, if a paper was required for a class that meant time was spent in the library looking up books with a card catalog. We had to read books, write down information, decipher and organize the information into a well-written paper. In the 21st century, students have everything at their fingertips. All that is required in typing is a keyword and an abundant amount of material is populated in a matter of seconds. With all this information available how do students know what is reliable and appropriate for academic use?…

It is so good to hear from you and I would be happy to answer your questions about Internet. You are right when you assume that the Internet makes my life much easier when I need to find information on anything. Although the Internet is a vast resource of information but not all of the information available is correct. Whatever I do Internet search I asked myself specific questions about the information that I find. I asked myself these questions to assess and evaluate the value of the information I found during a search. For example I would check the domain of the website and its affiliations. I would also ask myself if I notice any bias on the website this happens often because people will put misinformation out there in order to sell or promote their business and or interest. Also I check multiple sources in order to ensure that the information that I just found. By checking multiple sources you can compare the information that you find in order to ensure that the information is reliable and credible. Another tip I can offer you for determining the credibility of the website is to read the text carefully and follow the grammar and spelling rules to be sure that there are no errors. Also how well is the site organized is easy to find information that you are looking for? If the answer to this question is no odds are that the website may not be credible reliable source for information. My reason for saying this is an expert in a specific field would take the time to organize and structure their website in a way to get their information across in the most easily understandable way. So if a website is just thrown together with no rhyme or reason and structure the odds are the purpose of the website is to not share information but to mislead you for alternative motives. In the final tool I use for evaluating a site's credibility is what my gut instinct tells me. It is important to…

In order to access the value of all the information you find on the internet you must first evaluate what you are reading and look for other links that it may have in reference to what has been written. Meaning, take a closer look at one source and compare it with others you find. Some information is found to be accurate and some are found to be false. Determining which is true is the hard part. Most sources should have extra information you can access to back up the source you enter, which makes it reliable and credible. Reliable and credible sources are sources that have been found to be accurate and up to date. Keep in mind not all sources have to be up to date for it to be credible, some are not up to date but are reliable and can be trusted. Up to date sources are sources in which we know are being actively updated, and the information has a regular schedule. For example, information on World War I or II would not be updated because it happened a long time ago but information on the politics would be updated daily, because of all the issues that are still being dealt with. Look for the domains of the sites. Domains of a website are sites that are in ending in .edu, .gov, or .org. Sites that appear to be ending in .edu (Education) are sites in which information…
