How would you define academic readiness?
To me academic readiness means having a wide range of qualities. Being able to set aside time for school work and stay organized in order to be more efficient. Also, it has to be something that you really want in life otherwise it will fall to the wayside. Must be capable of participating and sharing input with the class and professor. Academic readiness for me also requires me to be courageous. Coming back to school after a long break can be scary, but this time I know I am ready and prepared to succeed.
What concerns, if any, do you have with academic writing and reading?
I’ve always felt that writing was one of my stronger points but it has been many years since I’ve had to do any academic writing. I’m mostly concerned about my grammar; I have forgotten the proper places for comas and semicolons. The ability to get my thoughts together in the proper order are also a concern for me. When it comes to reading, I’ve always struggled. I have a hard time remembering what I read, sometimes it’s as if I’m just seeing the words and not retaining anything.
What two university resources will you use to strengthen your writing and reading skills (refer to your Student Resources Worksheet)?
In order to help strengthen my reading and writing skills, I will use the Center for Writing Excellence and the Phoenix Library. They are two great resources that are offered to students. The center for writing excellence is a great tool in all aspects of life not only for school papers. In my current job and my future career, a main portion of the job will rely on writing skills.
