ACCOUNTABLE LEADERSHIP
By Paul Chaffee
“Afterword” Review
“ Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” (Matthew 16:24-25 ESV) Contrasted with Mr. Chaffee’s words, “Reflecting on your internal frame of reference and its influence on your behavior, in other words, may considerably improve your effectiveness.” Nowhere in this book on “Accountable Leadership” did Mr. Chaffee reference any of the three Pastoral epistles of Paul; (i.e. 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy and Titus). The “Afterword” seems to focus on relying on your creaturely attributes to be an effective leader, and the few references he does make to (g)od are in a generic sense, and usually prefaced by a sentence that links Christians to other religions. Mr. Chaffee, again, decides to use a strange choice of person as an example to back up his words. He writes, “Howard Thurman, whose extraordinary sermons and exploration of spiritual life have influenced tens of thousands of Christian and Jewish clergy…” Again, I apologize for being repetitive. I suppose that, for some, this book might seem like good reading, perhaps. As a Christian, it’s not something I would read. There is really nothing Christian or biblical about it. It’s a generic self-help book full of liberal unbiblical and unchristian humanistic ideas. God set forth the standard for “accountable leadership” in Christ’s church quite clearly in the bible. I see no reason to disregard the bible and instead turn to the twisted ideas and opinions of one man. In business, the idea is to reach as broad a market as possible. My favorite verses in the bible are “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is

A major part of the book is on how God develops a leader over time. Many young leaders don’t understand that there is a process that one has to go through in order to lead others. That process does not happen overnight. In fact the process never stops. God is always processing us to serve Him and His church better. These times of processing can occur because of crises, illness, persecution or discipline, self-choice, or providential circumstances.1 These moments of process are times where God teaches us life and leadership lessons. We are not only shaped by our training but also by our experiences.…

A church whose pastor and others in leadership have failed to put in place a proactive plan for discipleship for Believers is usually a “growing” church — growing stagnant, growing cold, growing spiritually immature Christians, and eventually, many growing closed. Patte said, “There is much at stake in accepting or rejecting the challenge of discipleship…” When a pastor or a church makes a conscious decision to make discipleship of Believers a primary focus in their church, they need a plan. The pastor can make his own plan, or find one that will fit the personality of the church. Putman, after some time, has come up with five stages and four spheres of discipleship.…

The modern-day church needs to go back to the blueprint put forth before us. Smither labors to show the biblical origins of proper mentorship and our need for its imitation. The author further supports this when he points out that, “While Jesus presented a model for the Twelve, Paul called the Corinthian believers to be “imitators” (mimētēs) of him, emulating his “ways which are in Christ.” Therefore, we would do well to imitate, follow, and live out the ways of Christ in our mentorship.…

As Jesus ascended to heaven from the Mount of Olives, he instructed his disciples to spread the gospel throughout the world and then finished his statement with a vote of confidence by saying, “and low I am with you always, even to the end of the world.” The disciples knew several facts; (1) Jesus would be with them throughout all their teachings and ministry, (2) they anticipated persecution, Jesus had warned them, and (3) they knew there would be unknown hardships that could eventually lead to their death. Knowing all this, the apostle’s, led by faith jumped into the world of Christianity. Did they face the same temptations that today’s minister’s face?…

Lori, I truly enjoyed your interview response on Reverend Jennifer Beagle. I can agree with her statement on developing a ministry, “It’s a battle worth fighting, suit-up, buckle-up, and don’t doubt that God is in everything. Find God in every circumstance and view people as creations”. (Beagle, 2015) Just as the varying parts of the human body need each other to best accomplish its work, so the Body of Christ needs to function interdependently, like a team. (Rom. 12:4-8; 1 Cor. 12:12-27) God so designed the Church that it "grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work". (Eph. 4:16) Christian leaders are servants. Jesus specifically addresses servant leadership…

Using effective ethical leadership is vital in every career field, but it is especially significant when working in human services. I have been a volunteer for over five years, working with women who are attempting to make positive changes and get their lives back on track. Most of these women have just been released from some type of incarceration. Most have lost their families, their homes, their jobs, and their self-worth. Most of these women suffer from alcoholism and addiction to drugs. Many of these women come from homes where some type of substance abuse was prevalent. Many of these women have been abused either physically, emotionally, or both. I work as a bridge between probation and parole and the women I assist, and I try my best to fill this gap with encouraging solutions.…

    My Philosophy of Ministry

The second part of my philosophy of ministry is to train leaders. A leader in the church is a godly servant who is influencing others in the church. Building leadership development in the local church is vital to the continual growth of the ministry (Acts 6: 3-4; 2 Tim. 2:2). I want to always be in the process of training individuals and preparing them to step into a leadership position. The leadership training process needs to include not only theological study and “hands-on” involvement, but community and relationship development as well.…

Christian leadership in my opinion is operating in and by Christ. We must be his hands and his feet with precepts. In order to lead and present change God must be in us and its evident must be known. Matthew 5: 13 -16 clearly proclaims the significance of our existence and Gods requirement of every believer. 2 Timothy 2:15 expresses the need for every believer to be approved by the Lord first and then going forth to preach the word throughout to Gods people.…
