The four parts are one's form, clan, language, and shadow. This all comes into one because when a child is first born; traditonally the mother greets her little one by telling the baby its maternal clan followed by the paternal clan. "Clan" affiliation presents a person with their initial history. It gives a person a sense of belonging by informing them of who is related to them. That is the main reason I stress and try to encourage our future generations to be taught our Navajo language together with our traditional ways. The "language" one speaks is a testimony of the speakers background; further, the language one uses when interacting with others is a reflection of his/her demeanor. At least with respect to their own environment, these people had considerably more knowledge than we do today. Every indication we have about traditional Indian life suggests that they never stopped learning and gathering insights into the operation of the natural world.
