Achilles Anger In The Iliad
The story, The Iliad, is an epic poem written by an ancient Greek poet, Homer, set during year nine of the ten-year Trojan War between the Greeks and the Trojans. Written in the min-eighth century bc, it’s often considered the earliest work in world literature and it was heavily influenced by the Greek and Roman culture. It explores many themes such as anger, strife, alienation and reconciliation. The main theme, however, is anger, specifically Achilles’. Achilles' rage in the Iliad was not justifiable, he did everything out of his thirst for being remembered, he was overdramatic and his personality in general as seen during his interactions with Agamemnon, and Hector’s and Patroclus’ deaths.
The story opens with a discussion between

"Achilles (pronounced uh-KILL-eez) is one of the most important warriors in Greek mythology. He had strength, bravery, military skills, pride, and honor—all qualities that the ancient Greeks prized as manly virtues. Yet his behavior was also shaped by anger, stubbornness, and revenge," (UXL Encyclopedia of World Mythology). The author of this quote demonstrates how Achilles is a fantastic warrior, but he was too angry, stubborn and sought revenge. These qualities can make a good warrior bad and undesirable to work with, no one wants to command someone who won’t follow their instructions. Another example of Achilles personality being all around terrible is when he killed Hector, "Meanwhile the Trojans, angry because Achilles will not return Hector's corpse for proper funeral ceremonies, mourn the death of their hero," (Iliad, The, Wickersham). Wickersham is illustrating how Achilles’ was so disrespectful to Hector’s body and Hector’s family by messing with it and not returning it for a proper ceremony. "Achilles and the Greeks fight fiercely to prevent Patroclus’ corpse from suffering indignities like the ones they themselves inflict on Hector’s corpse. Gathering round, the Greeks stab the Trojan prince’s body, jesting that “Hector’s a lot softer to the touch now/Than he was when he was burning our ships” (Iliad, 22.413–414)...Proper disposal of the dead …show more content…
He does many unjustifiable things because of his anger, as seen with Agamemnon, Hector, and Patroclus. His overdramatic tendencies caused him to stop aiding the Greeks by pulling his entire army out of war and slaughter innumerous Trojans. His thirst for never-ending fame caused him to disrespect Hector’s corpse and it also ended in his very own death. Lastly, his sour and fiery personality caused him to belittle Hector’s body and not allow him safe passage to the other world and almost cost the Greeks the war. In conclusion, Achilles’ did terrible and unacceptable things that were not

Achilles criticizes the “heroic code” in the Iliad. Achilles has an unusual double fate: he knows that if he goes home from Troy, he will have a long life without glory. If he stays, he will win great glory but his life will be cut short. One measure of the extraordinary experience Achilles is going through emerges from his refusal to abide by the customary rules of status, when he rejects Agamemnon’s offer in Book Nine. Both characters in the myth are fighting because Agamemnon has taken charge of Achilles’ Trojan slave named Briseis, claiming her as his property. Achilles has feelings for Briseis, which drives the plot in The Iliad. Achilles already despises Agamemnon, so this final act of disrespect causes Achilles…

A complex character is a character that is believable . Homer made Achilles complex , in order to make him realistic . This results in multiple or conflicting motivations . This makes the character realistic because they often portrayed negative or positives reasons . This is the case in Homer’s Iliad When Achilles went from Disrespectful to respectful . For example in the poem hector begged achilles to give his body to be returned to his parents so they could cremate and bury it . Quoted from the poem it says “ I beg you by your soul and by your parents , do not let the dogs feed on me in your encampment by the ships . Accept the bronze and gold my…

I see Achilles as ill-tempered and reactionary because he cannot control his temper and becomes furious when his pride is hurt. He is very prideful and will do basically anything for his name to be remembered. His mother, a Goddess and fortune teller, tells him his fate, if he goes to Troy to fight Hector his name will be forgotten. He still goes because of his strong desire to avenge his best friend and cousin Patroclus’ death. I think this shows that, even though prideful, he is also very loving and cared deeply for people especially his family and close friends. His rage is very evident in his personality throughout The Iliad. In the section of The Iliad read, his anger is shown at Hector for killing Patroclus, it is apparent that pride and anger are a major part to his personality.…

Achilles was called a tragic hero because his flaw was to be selfish. A selfish person lacked consideration for others and was concerned with their own pleasure. In the Iliad, Achilles mostly cared about himself. For example, Agamemnon stole Achilles’ prize possession. For this reason, Achilles refused to join the war because he was angry with Agamemnon. Achilles stated, “But listen while I tell you exactly how I want things to be: ‘I want you to win me great honor and glory in the eyes of all Greeks, so that they give my lovely women back to me and…

In Homer’s book The Iliad, Homer tells the story of the Trojan War with Achilles, the best Greek warrior. However, Achilles does not like Agamemnon, the king of Mycenae, because he took Briseis (Briseis was a woman that Achilles had received as a war prize). This is the reason why Achilles was raged at Agamemnon. In a rage, Achilles wants to kill all of the Trojans, especially Hector, the best Trojan warrior. Patroclus, Achilles’ best friend goes out to the battle field as Achilles (wearing his armor), trying to kill Hector but instead Hector kills Patroclus thinking he has killed Achilles. When Achilles finds out about this, he is very mad and goes out to kill Hector himself. When he kills Hector, he is very arrogant about it. Only after this happens does Achilles get Briseis back from Agamemnon.…

This is important because it reminds us that heroism is not only glory and victory, but that good leadership is extremely important, because if a hero sends his men into battle without giving good counsel beforehand, then he will look bad if they end up getting killed. When Aias and Odysseus are sent by Agamemnon to implore with Achilles' to fight for the Greeks, Achilles disagrees with them, saying "There was no gratitude given for fighting continuously against your enemies”. At this point in his life Achilles wants peace and not have to fight battles that aren’t worth fighting, especially putting the lives of others in danger. It wasn’t until he lost Patroclus, his closest friend the strongest relationship that his ever had with anyone that he was ready to go to battle for. Patroclus becomes the prime motivation for Achilles to return to battle. The death of his friend reinforces a great deal of Achilles' actions and emotions about the Trojan War. His death stirred a lot of different emotions within Achilles, and made him reevaluate his life and believes. He didn’t want to have to bury his best friend, he couldn’t bare the loss and not being able to see him…

The first characteristic of a tragic hero is that they must suffer more than deserved. This stands true for Achilles, Hector, Beowulf, and Hamlet. Achilles, son of King Peleus and Thetis, rightfully earned his title as one of the greatest heroes in the war between the Greeks and Trojans. Achilles was a special warrior because he could only be killed if he was wounded in his…

Achilles cares about nothing other than himself and making sure that his name lives on forever, while Hector cares about winning the battle for his family and country. In one battle, Hector kills Patroclus thinking it was Achilles, which really sets Achilles off and is the reason that Achilles rejoins the war. When the two warriors finally meet near the end of the Epic, Hector is confronted with the fact that he is indeed going to die. Hector tries to think of ways to get out of the battle with Achilles, like bribery. This shows that Hector is not the perfect hero like many people may have thought when they first read about him. One cannot forget that Hector is only human, and that he does have the same characteristics as us humans do now. Everyone has to face a fear that they do not necessarily want to from time to time, and courage is the trait that brings the true heroes to the forefront. After being chased by Achilles for a while, Hector finally realizes that he has to fight Achilles. The fact that Hector stands up for himself and his country proves that he is courageous and that he is indeed a…

He is willing to sacrifice everything else so that his name will be remembered. During his fight against Hector, Achilles refuses any aide from his comrades; afraid he would be second best. "And brilliant Achilles shook his head at the armies, never letting them hurl their sharp spears at Hector-someone might snatch the glory, Achilles come in second,"(2.245-217). Another case of Achilles infamy "Hector-surely you thought when you stripped Patroclus' armor that you, you would be safe! Never fear of me-far from fighting as I was-you fool! Left behind there, down by the beaked ships his great avenger waited, a greater man by far-that man was I, and I smashed your strength!"(2.390-345). Achilles' deep-seated character flaws constantly impede his ability to act with nobility and integrity. This trait is accountable for his sordid response to Hector's distorted plea of honoring his body when he's dead. "You unforgivable, you…don't talk to me of pacts. There are no binding oaths between men and lions-wolves and lambs can enjoy no meeting of the minds-they are all bent on hating each other to the death. So with you and me, no love between us, no truce till one or the other falls or gluts with blood,"(2.309-314). The respect for a fallen enemy vanishes as bloodlust, vengeance, and rage run through Achilles' veins. Achilles ruthlessly impends and torments Hector as he breathes his last breathe. "Would to god my rage, my fury would drive me…

    Odysseus A Leader Analysis

Homer portrays Achilles as a man with great strength and a true passion for fighting. Both Achilles and Odysseus represent the Greek ideals of what makes an epic hero. Their sense of duty, courage, and bravery is what allows them to be heroic leaders in their respective journeys and battles. They both encounter personal struggles and tests, but both have come out stronger. For example, Odysseus endures constant trials along his journey to return to Ithaca. He encounters turbulent weather, the loss of his men, and the continual wrath of Poseidon. Likewise, Achilles’ entire existence is a mixture of war, hardships, and trying to establish himself as an immortal Greek hero. Although they both follow different paths, the countless trials that they face led them both to become great leaders and solidify their status in Greek history. Though they share several similarities, their differences are both interesting and varied. One example is Achilles, who is an honorable man in the beginning of his journey but after the death of Patroclus, he becomes completely irrational and only desires to destroy his enemies. Odysseus is far more level-headed and truly desires to return to his home and his family. As a warrior, Achilles is known for being impulsive and revengeful. He is completely focused on demolishing his opponents and often lacks the human emotion to care for those around him.” In the…
