3 Witches (three is a supernatural number).
They want to meet ( “upon the heath”(wasteland))- “ When the battles lost and won”- (Paradox- (a statement that seems to contradict itself)).
“Fair is foul” and foul is fair” (good vs bad, bad is good)- theme- Reversal of moral order.
“Fair is foul and foul is fair”, “It over through the fog and filthy fair”- Rhyming couple.
Act 1 Scene 2 (February 9th)
Battle is not going well.
Macdonald fighting against Scotland (traitor)- he is killed by Macbeth -“Unseam'd him from the nave to th'chaps” ( Cut him from the navel to the jaw then cut off his head).
Macbeth is a good soldier and loyal to his country.
Duncan- “Valiant cousin, worthy gentlemen”.
Norway- Second assault.
Macbeth and Banquo are ready for the next attack.
Duncan wants the thane of Cawdor to be executed.- “Go pronounce his present death, and with his former title greet Macbeth” (Macbeth is being honored by Duncan for a job well done.)
Duncan admires Macbeth. (Fair, Generous, Grateful etc...)
Act 1 Scene 3
The sailors wife refused to share her chestnuts with the witches.
The witches are going to punish the sailor with controlling the winds.
The sailor will suffer.
The witches are powerful, revengeful, heartless, power to cause storms.
The witches have beards. 3 Prophecies:
1. Macbeth will be Thane of cawdor.
2. Macbeth will be king of Scotland.
3. Banquo will be the father of kings.
Macbeth seems to be feared about the prophecies.
Macbeth's reaction to the prophecies: “Stay you imperfect speakers”, “speak I charge you”, Macbeth is curious and brave.
Banquo doesn't believe that they have seen and thought they were going crazy.
Ross tells Macbeth that he is the thane of cawdor.
Macbeth “why do you dress me in borrowed robs?”- (Clothing image)
Macbeth “The greatest is behind” - is yet to come.
“And often times, to win us to harm, the instruments of darkness tell us truths” (meaning- Win us with truth and
