When Jared Diamond takes a visit to New Guinea, he is encountered by a local politician on the beach whose name is Yali, and as they walked and talked together, Yali asked a simple question “Why is it that you white people developed so much cargo and brought it to New Guinea, but we black people had little cargo of our own?’’ .That question made Jared go on the journey of his life. The book explains how three major powers: Guns, Germs, and Steel brought by the Europeans, conquered the world and raises a simple question on why many societies and civilizations were different back then and how it has shaped the fates of humanity as it is today.…

The article, Guns, Germs and Steel, written by Jared Diamond, is an argument about how and why things happened differently in history in different continents. It’s about looking deeper into why things happened the way they did. Why did western Eurasian societies become more powerful? What enabled these parts of the world to develop more quickly and in turn be able to conquer less developed societies around the world? The important message to grasp from this article is not about how certain continents or areas becoming developed quicker, but why those specific areas were the ones to develop quicker. An example of this that Diamond discusses, is how New Guineans were still living in the “Stone Age” 200 years ago when Europeans came to New Guinea with materials (called cargo) that were very valued. The question was, why did the people of New Guinea have a scarce amount of cargo when the white Europeans had so much of it? (page 14)…

“Powder” is the story of an unnamed boy’s coming-of-age, framed by a father and son ski trip and shadowed by an impending divorce. Wolff uses the son’s initiation of conversation late in the story both to signal the son’s maturation and as a commentary on the importance of trust in familial relationships and letting go of fears about the future. Throughout the story, the son is put in situations outside of his comfort zone - specifically situations where he cannot see ahead far enough, literally or figuratively, to plan the outcome - as a result of his father’s actions and his trust, or lack thereof, in his father. The turning point in these comparisons happens when the son finally acquiesces to the father’s unspoken pleas for a truce and goes along with the conversation. The first two times he is not able to plan, the son is clearly extremely uncomfortable: “By now I couldn’t see the trail […] I stuck to [the father] like white on rice […] and somehow made it to the bottom,” and “The lay of the road behind us had been marked by our own tracks, but there were no tracks ahead of us […] to keep my hands from shaking I clamped them between my knees.”…

Is it always a “good” thing to tell the truth? If a friend were to ask “does this shirt look good on me?” would someone lie and say yes just to spare the friend’s feelings? Or if someone wanted to go to the movies with a friend and the friend did not want to go, would he or she straight up say “no I don't want to go”? Or would they claim to be busy with something else just so there's no hard feelings?…

I am not a fan of baseball. I don’t consider it a sport. This is most likely due to the idea being drilled into my head by my middle school lacrosse coach. He had a bumper sticker that had a little cartoon boy next to a lacrosse goal, whizzing on a baseball, but I digress. Walking into the room, I had the preconceived notion that it would be boring. Because baseball is a boring sport. They don’t even move half the time. I decided to keep an open mind anyway, because I needed material to write an essay for my English class and because I was at a new school, starting a new chapter in my life.…
