The character Okonkwo in the book, “Things Fall Apart,” was a highly successful clan leader. His father, Unoka, was lazy, very irresponsible, fell into debt, and he brought shame to his family. Due to Okonkwo’s father’s bad reputation, it pushed him to succeed. Okonkwo has many wives and held many titles. Okonkwo is a man that personally does not show his emotion because he believes it is a sign of weakness. He is the character that will do anything to achieve his potential. Sometimes it can be hard for Okonkwo to obtain his anger if something goes wrong. “Okonkwo’s second wife had merely cut off a few off it to wrap some food and she said so. Without further argument Okonkwo gave her a sound beating and left her and her only daughter weeping” (Achebe 27). This quote shows that Okonkwo has barely any control over his temper. Just because his second wife cut off a few leaves from the banana tree and told him the truth, he still beat her for being honest for her actions. His temper can obviously get the best of him is small things that happen. “...the wife who had just been beaten murmured something about guns that never been shot. Unfortunately for her Okonkwo heard it and ran madly into his room for the loaded gun, ran out again and aimed at her as she..”(Achebe 28). This quote shows that Okonkwo cannot show sympathy towards those who do not obey him or do as he says. Since his wife murmured something behind his back, he nearly shot her because of his out of control anger. His anger leads him to be an unsympathetic
