“Liberty, when it begins to take root, is a plant of rapid growth.” This quote in a letter to James Madison, from George Washington, on March 2nd, 1788, explains that once the push for liberty comes through and change is made, it is like the snowball effect. At this point of the war, there were constant losses for the Continental Army they were lacking faith and hope for their liberty. The soldier’s enlistments were also very near to their end and time was going by fast; many were prepared to leave and not signing up again. Overall, the Continental Army was headed towards failure. They needed something to give them a push in the right direction. The battle that raised high spirits in the army was The Battle of Trenton. The Battle of Trenton had the most profound impact on thecourse of events because, the Continental Army got high spirits and hope for success, many were persuaded to continue their term with the army as a soldier, and with George Washington’s tactics and leadership, they were able to capture over 900 hessians that would have otherwise been aid to the British.…
In his article, “The Myth of Violence in the Old West,” Roger D. McGrath attempts to rebut the common myth of the old west being plagued by high crime rate. Although McGrath agreed that the old west was violent, he maintained how the violence at that time was dissimilar from todays. To help illustrate his point, he compared today’s crime rate for burglary, robbery, and murder in major cities, with that of Bodie.…
One example of a group that was seen as Socialist were the Knights of Labor who worked to gain rights for the workers through legislation, and also believed in Arbitration. As seen in Document F, the Knights of Labor was one of the spoons that contributed to mixing the “Labor Interest Broth.” The Knights of Labor was considered one of the groups that led to the failure of unions because there were too many unions with too many different views and they were unable to get anything accomplished. Another group that was considered unsuccessful was the IWW. The IWW was a union chalked full of Wobblies, immigrants, blacks, and what people considered “radicals.” Document C shows that the public was accusing the unions of sucombing to communism saying that they barred a “red flag” against the United States. The IWW was full of workers who were chasing after the idea of communism, thinking that it would give them the rights that they wanted, but Document C shows that cutting open the duck to get the “golden eggs” wouldn’t show you any profit, it has to stay alive for it to lay more eggs, just like the government would have to continue the way it is for the people to gain any of the working rights that they wanted.…

In the early history of the 1600's, North America had been discovered and establishment of the New World had begun. Although Spain and England both focused on the colonization and exploration of the Americas, their ambitions and goals were very different. The most important reasons for English colonization were religious freedom, to seek refuge, and new economic opportunities. The Spanish, on the other hand, exploited the New World in search of gold and silver, greed navigated their search. Although both the English and the Spanish experienced mild success, the English tactics for daily survival were much more organized and peaceful.…
Throughout history there are all kinds of historians that describe about our history and how we got to where we are. Charles Beard is a unique historian because he talks about the motives on our history event by not just any event. This issue created a lot of debate on what Charles Beard believed and that is the motives of the Founding Fathers.…
Under the rules of 17th century siege warfare the New Model Army were allowed to kill the townspeople, however this right was rarely if ever exercised. The attitude was that revenge could be taken upon a town that took so much effort to besiege. Even during many of the brutal wars in Europe at the time much of the violence, such as those that took place during the French Wars of Religion were in fact conducted by angry mobs. This piece of parliamentary brutality was different and was much more reflective of the state organized violence that followed the French Revolution 140 years later. The only civilian account we have was written by Dean Barnard, a Royalist and Protestant cleric tells is that people were slaughtered in their own homes. This style of violence was conducted by an army directed by a parliament that was willing to hold on to power at all costs.…
The participants in the studies view the years of the Third Reich as positive and stable, free from political upheaval and economic uncertainty. “The Guaranteed pay packet, order, KdF [Kraft durch Freude, Strength through Joy, the National Socialist leisure organization] and the smooth running of the political machinery…Thus ‘National Socialism’ makes them think merely of work, adequate nourishment, KdF and the absence of ‘disarray’ in political life”. (Bessel, p. 97)…
Theseus’s slaying of the mighty Minotaur mutes the accounts of his treatment of Ariadne that may differ from Hamilton’s. Would a female still be acknowledged as heroic if she abandoned a man who helped her? For example in Atalanta’s Greek myth, Atalanta avoids romance at all cost and this seems to show that she breaks free from the stereotype that woman must find love to become a hero. Atalanta imposes a condition on men wanting to marry her, “As a way of disposing of them [men] easily and agreeably she declared that she would marry whoever could beat her in a footrace, knowing well that there was no such man alive. She had a delightful time.…
Conflicts and violence in society are nothing new to the human race. Whether it's between the “haves” and the “have nots,” the government versus it's citizens, or citizens verses each other, constant conflict seems to be an aspect of civilization that humanity cannot live without. The most detrimental of conflicts that influenced the Revolution were factors of economic strife, the brewing conflict between colonists and the British rulers, as well as the discord between the colonists themselves. Although there are different theories as to how or why the initial conflicts started, there is no denying that America has a bloody history and a common usage of violence as an end to its means. A constant factor throughout history is the bloodshed…
Adam Smith wrote in Theory of Moral Sentiments about the unnecessary need for political revolutions in order to remedy the problems of the government. He explained that the spirit of the system tended to take the current public spirit, or opinion, and transform it into an animated fanaticism. The current rulers of the country fell short of the reformation they originally planned announced that the government needs restructuring, and the constitution needed rewriting; even though the public was generally happy with the current state of the government. In simpler terms, Adams Smith believed the government set in place is the way the country should be lead forever with a few minor changes along the way. Although Smith made an excellent point that…

In his hallmark work The Wealth of Nations, Adam Smith generates a Hobbesian dilemma when he asserts in Book I that man posses “the propensity to truck, barter, and exchange one thing for another” (Smith, 25). Smith supports this claim as the principle from which the division of labor originates, citing the example of tribespeople exchanging surplus goods. However, does man really have this natural propensity to trade, rather than a natural propensity to fight and steal as argued by Thomas Hobbes? What keeps tribespeople from murdering each other to collect additional surplus without having to sacrifice their own goods? In his earlier work The Theory of Moral Sentiments, Smith answers these questions with the virtue of justice.…
Communitarianism focuses on the belief that humans are naturally compassionate and kind upon birth and are social and reasoning. They believe that behaviors such as selfishness and greed develop over time and are a product of society’s negative influences. Our morality is said to teach us to think about the public good and according to J. J. Rousseau, the philosopher behind communitarianism, humans have a natural capacity for compassion but our judgement has become clouded due to absolute power by monarchs, private property and inequality (Communitarianism Lecture). In the real world, selfishness and greed from impacted industries such as business are an example of how society has shaped…
