Macbeth upon first inspection, seemed relatively normal, until he was promoted to Thane of Cawdor, and he became stuck on the downward spiral from there. How could a man of once distinguished morals, commit such vile acts? The answer is simple, he was a victim of addiction. These moods swings and erratic behavior have a name, and the term is ‘coming down’. Most addicts when they haven’t had their drug of choice become filled with anxiety, rage, and the unbridled desire to get more, that simple definition explains why Macbeth become the raging villain he was at the end of his reign.
Unfortunately, for Macbeth, and his immediate family, no one realized he was inflicted with a very destructive disease, addiction. Addiction is classified as ‘chronic disease’ known for drug seeking behaviors, compulsive behaviors, and their actions become difficult to maintain, and its known as being a relapse drug; do to the number of addicted people who relapse on their drug of choice.
