Cutting America’s Addiction to Nicotine It is a commonly known fact that the use of tobacco products will increase the destruction of any given person's health. How is it possible that most food products sold to the United States public must pass the FDA checkpoints? Yet our government is allowing manufactures to distribute a cancerous product at an financially affordable cost. There are many ads, commercials, and billboards posted around populated areas or on television to drive home what smoking really costs; yet a majority of our population today is still consuming these products. For example my grandma Judy started smoking at the age twelve; sixty years later and still a smoker, the doctors have found zero signs of cancer. That certainly does not entail there is not other long term effects of this nasty addiction. A long term smoking habit can increase the chances of many common diseases. Amendment 72 presents the idea of raising the Colorado State tobacco tax by $2.59, making tobacco prices at an all time high. There was a total of 2,535,317 votes accounted for on this amendment according to Denver Post reporter Kevin Simpson. Yet only 46.5% of the voters selected “Yes” on amendment 72, posted by The New York Times.
Every smoker has their own excuse. For some, inhaling or consuming tobacco products is the healthiest form of indulgence. From personal experience, nicotine became an unhealthy form of stress relief. A way I could calm my nerves during the stressful hours of the school day, but there have been many changes. I have a shortness of breath from performing a simple task. I also have developed a cough along with a loss of vivid smells. If there is one thing I can say this is definitely something I would like to move away from, and I encourage any smoker or tobacco user to leave the comfort zone and save your well being. Along with that there are still consumers could care less, until it starts affecting responsibilities such as bills, payments, transportation.
