With this mentorship Mortenson was able to achieve success in the mission he set forth to complete. As I had already once failed in my success as a student, when I decided to go back to school I knew that I had to take it seriously. I enrolled in a guidance class for my first semester in order to get myself on the right track. Essentials for Student Success was where I fortunately gained my mentor Andrea Torres. I was unaware of what was holding me down on my path of success, and still feeling lost. I needed the right guidance to steer me in the right direction. Reading Three Cups of Tea I was moved and could relate to Mortenson when he said “He was the wisest man I’d ever met.” (Mortenson and Relin 153) When Andrea’s guidance took me in the right direction, I felt that she was the wisest woman to ever cross my path. Andrea did not know me, or the life I was living, but she was able to provide me with the tools necessary to move forward on my educational path and in my general life. I learned how to use creator language, saying “I can” instead of “I cannot”, or “I will” instead of “I don’t want to.” Andrea’s mentorship continues to guide me through my journey as we grow closer every day, and I found the importance of building relationships with the…

According to LaVant and Shandley’s definition (as cited in Gibson, 2014), mentoring refers to the process which intentionally exists between many people that involves a mentor acting as a guide to the mentee and makes them fit in a new environment. Many approaches and programs have been placed in ensuring that all students get the same level of higher education. However, all these approaches are limited by margination and institutionalized racism towards African American students. Mentoring has brought a new dimension and solution to such problems.…

I believe that I am qualified to be a peer mentor because I live by the saying “Abstain to Attain” everyday. As a young adult among so much peer pressure, it is hard not to cave in. I understand though, drugs, sex, and drinking alcohol isn’t worth it. I have too much to lose in life if I get pregnant at a young age, or if I become an alcoholic or a drug addict. My family is counting on me as well. I will be a first generation student and I will not let them down because I gave into peer pressure and went down the wrong path.…

I believe that a peer mentor is a student who is willing to be a helping hand for their peers. They are available to provide support, guidance, or just be an approachable companion. They take pride in doing what it takes to better themselves and other’s around them. They are able to identify and accept their strengths and weaknesses and build upon them. I think it’s important for a peer mentor to be someone that isn’t selfish because you need to sacrifice your own time for others. They should be caring because it’s all about what you can do for other people and our school. They need to be driven and motivated to complete any tasks that are thrown their way. They also need to be able to balance mentoring, school, and whatever other activities…

I feel like the most important attribute for a mentor is a willingness to help other people. I think that a Year 9 Mentor should be not only be helpful, but also respectful, honest, determined and confident. I feel as though I have some of the attributes that a Year 9 Mentor needs, and the ones that I don’t have, I would really like to improve upon and try to learn more of, and I believe that being a mentor will enable me to do so. The main reason why I’d like to be a mentor Is because I understand how daunting it can be to come to a new school where you don’t know anyone, and that’s why I’d like to be there for the new year nines, as someone who utterly wants to help them and someone who they can easily approach. I’d really like to help…
