5. Architecture of Adobe Pass
The following discusses the central entitlement transactions of authentication and authorization. Authentication is the process of confirming with a Pay TV provider that a given user is a known customer. Authorization is the process wherein a Pay TV provider confirms that an authenticated user has a valid subscription to a given resource.

The Adobe Pass backend server, hosted by Adobe:
• Provisions the authentication and authorization workflows with the Pay TV providers that require server-to-server communication between Adobe Pass and the operator.
• Maintains the configuration for Programmer sites and applications.
• Hosts the downloadable Access Enabler component files.
• Generates authentication and authorization tokens.

These tasks include:
• integrating Adobe Pass's Access Enabler library into your web page or media player
• server-side work to integrate the Adobe Pass token verifier component into your video streaming workflow
• creating a UI for the access workflow into your website or app (some elements of this, such as the actual login process, are provided by the Pay TV operator, and some elements are optionally available as part of Adobe Pass)

This white paper provides an overview of the Programmer process.
7. User Workflow
When a customer requests a protected resource from a Programmer for the first time, the Programmer uses the Access Enabler to present the customer with a list of Pay TV providers from which to choose. When the provider is selected, the Access Enabler then redirects the customer to that operator for initial user authentication. Once authentication succeeds, Adobe Pass communicates with the selected Pay TV provider to authorize access to the specified resource. Details on these processes

The content delivery network (CDN) industry is one that is experiencing tremendous growth. Not only is the industry itself growing, there is expectation that the video market segment will face tremendous growth. Combined with low barriers to entry, there is a new wave of competitors entering the market. Akamai has created a unique advantage by differentiating themselves by operating a decentralized network that allows the company to operate on the “edge” of the internet, providing their clients a superior product. IP’s have also been patented to protect them from imitation and direct competition. At the same time, the decentralized network is putting Akamai at a cost disadvantage due to the high costs associated with the maintenance and the continued innovation.…

With widespread use of the Internet and improvements in streaming media and compression technology, digital music, images, DVDs, books and games can be distributed instantaneously across the Internet to end-users. Many digital service providers sell their digital content not only through DVDs but also over computer networks. However, without protection and management of digital rights, digital content can be easily copied, changed, and distributed to a large number of recipients, which could cause revenue loss to media companies. To protect commercial digital intellectual property and avoid digital piracy, we need a system that prevents unauthorized access to digital content and manages content usage rights. (Liu and Safavi-Naini and Sheppard 2003) Estimating revenue losses due to illegal downloads is challenging because it is difficult to determine what fraction of illegal downloads result in lost revenue for the industry and whether illegal downloads, through the "free publicity" they generate, have any positive impacts on box office revenues. However, it is likely that redistribution of unauthorized copies through the Internet will increasingly affect DVD movie sales and paid Internet distribution of movies. As the ease of downloading unauthorized copies of movies grows with the availability of low-cost, high-bandwidth Internet connections and peer-to-peer file sharing networks, the movie industry's concerns about illegal downloads is intensifying. These concerns are heightened by unauthorized copies of movies becoming available on the Internet prior to their U.S. theater release (Seiler and Snider 2003)…

BY: EE FOOK MING DATE: 4 NOV 2012 EMAIL: FOOKMING_EE@YAHOO.COM INTRODUCTION This is an integrated solution that comprises of the following functional components: § Virtual Set-top Box (STB) and virtual residential gateway § Over-the-top video solutions § Over private/public cloud To provide a flexible, personalized, multi-screen with quality of experience for pay TV customers. CUSTOMERS Traditionally, the pay TV market is being monopolized by the cable and satellite (DTH) pay TV operators. In the recent years, as the media and telecommunication industry are converging, many telecom operators are rolling out their pay TV equivalent services through their broadband infrastructure such as xDSL and FTTH. These are the target customers, both the Pay TV broadcasters and telecom operators, which the solutions are intended for. The solutions can be extended for Pay TV startup. VALUE PROPOSITIONS The traditional Pay TV solutions are rigid, based on old technology, nonstandard and fragmented, required expensive capital invested (for startup) and equally expensive OPEX to cover license fees, professional services and support and maintenance. The proposed integrated solutions addressed the following: § It reduces tremendously the CAPEX investment required for the infrastructure, hardware and software and the back office required to operate the pay TV systems. It based on the hosted and media cloud, typically managed services model. § Set-top box is the largest hurdle in most of the pay TV business case. It is a very expensive component in the CAPEX investment that crumbles most pay TV business case. Moving from physical STB to virtual STB would immediately remove the upfront STB investment. § Virtual STB as it is in the cloud would remove the inconvenience of software support and upgrade, in addition they are expensive for the subscribers that are charged to them in the form of maintenance & support and software fees. § The implementation and technology deployed are…
