In a long-term care facility, caregivers assist their residents in their activities of the daily living, prompting one to feel their independence being eradicated. Mr. M.W needs assistance for all his routines, must be supervised and has sensors on him to alert the team if he tries to move from his bed, all this takes a toll on his identity and body image. By integrating him into this program, he can regain a sense of individuality ultimately, improving his views on his identity and body image. Another positive outcome focuses on the aspect of increasing his social interaction. In Molzahn’s, Gallaghter’s & McNulty’s (2009) article Quality of Life Associated with Adult Day Center, a study was done on the elderly who participated in an adult day care center, and a participant divulged, “I’m a happier per- son” because “I have company over there. I have someone to talk to” (p. 40) and another participant disclosed that they went three times a week because he valued socialization. In Molzahn’s, Gallaghter’s & McNulty’s (2009) article Quality of Life Associated with Adult Day, a participant in their study revealed, “I think this is beneficial to me— it keeps my mind sharp” (p. 41) ultimately, keeps the mind working to slow the progression of nerve degeneration because “with aging, the dendrites appear to “wear out,” and the number of neurons decreases with a corresponding decrease in brain weight and size (Touhy, 2012, p.83), leading to cognitive impairments. Mr. W.M stated, “ sorry I can’t remember if I had a bowel movement, I think I’m getting Alzheimer’s disease, my brain doesn’t work well anymore” (Client February 2nd, 2016), he recognizes variations in proper mental function, leading him to feel frustrated. “Older adults should remain active and engaged in activities that are stimulating for the mind (Touhy, 2012, p. 102) to avert or slow the progression of nerve degeneration. Therefore, putting Mr. W.M into an adult day center will keep his brain active through the means of socialization and doing activities, which will maintain his cognitive function and prevail positive outcomes in relation to his
