In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. It talks about certain themes in the novel. The theme coming of age is a significant part of the novel. It affects the characters in the book to have a greater understanding of how Lee views coming of age. Also a literary convention that is used to convey the theme is the time and sequence in the novel.
Scout and Jem are experiencing adult situations that they never took acknowledge before. Which is mostly in the second part of the novel, when it has been to summers later. Scout and Jem start to encounter their father’s case and how people are starting to act towards him. For example when Jem, Scout and Dill when to go check if Atticus was swell. They have saw
a mob coming toward Atticus and was almost going to kill Atticus and Tom Robinson if Scout hadn’t went up to Mr. Cunningham and talk to him about his son. Which made the mob leave, but while Scout was talking to Mr. Cunningham it wasn’t in the back of her mind what was actually happening. “ The full meaning of the night’s events hit me and I began to cry (208).” The quote demonstrates when Scout actually realizes what has happened she is now coming of age and thought about what would’ve happened if they weren’t there. She got the idea of the concept of how it’s essential to realize what is happening around you.
