Expand Your Literature Review Workplace pressures have focused a great deal of attention on the low-skilled adult. The industry has changed over the past decade, putting adults out of work who now require education, and the credentials to build their abilities to earn family wages (O'neill and Thomson 2013). Adult students are not only returning to school for their job security but also to gain more knowledge in the technology world. The adult students grew up with a hardbound textbook now students have the luxury of electronic books which is something that most adult students are not familiar with.

Most adult students attend school for a purpose. They want to advance within their job, they are looking for a second career, or they would like to be able to communicate with their children that are in college. Most adult students do not have time to stay on campus and socialize as do their younger classmates which most of the time live on campus. This is one of the main differences between the young and adult students. Most adult students attend college and leave when it is time to leave. The young students have a purpose but also have time to enjoy the college life that surrounds them.

Conclusion It is rare that you find an adult student that lives on campus and does not work but attends college full-time. The life of an adult student is very different from your typical college student. The adult student has more responsibilities to think about while they are trying to juggle school, work, and family life. Sometimes the adult student is returning to school just because they enjoy learning but most of the time you will find it is to better

    Co-ed is an adult learner and meets the typical “characteristics which include: entry to college delayed, being employed full time, being financially independent, attending classes part time. (Choy 2002, 1) She is over 25 years of age or older and did not follow the conventional pattern of continuing a postsecondary immediately after completion of high school. She falls into the 56% of college students which are typically female according to (Upcraft, 19). Adult learners come to college campuses with wide ranges of backgrounds and a variety of reasons. Co-ed came back because she found herself displaced and needed to find a way to financially support herself. Unlike normal adult learners, Co-ed is attending college full-time students and working full time but she does not have a family at home that depends on her. Co-ed considers herself as a “student who works”. This places her in the 26% of students which work and go to school according to the 1999–2000 National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (Berker and Horn 2003, 5) Co-ed did enrolled in a college and program which offers evening and weekend classes which she can fit into her work schedule.     The Adult Education and Economic Growth Act (AEEGA) amended the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) to encourage the use and availability of career pathways for low-skilled adults, focus on postsecondary education, career success and help students meet the needs of 21st century jobs. The Workforce Investment Act of 2012 (“H.R. 4227”) modernizes and enhances the adult education system to better meet the longer-term, postsecondary, and employment needs of students. Bridge programs are one way to encourage career pathways for low-skilled adults. Programs like the Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training Program link adult basic education with adult secondary education and community college occupational programs. Focus on postsecondary education instead of just having a GED is occurring through integrated education and training, and concurrent enrollment, which helps students to progress more quickly by allowing them to earn credits in both basic skills courses and postsecondary level classes. The Colorado Community College System commissioned a project called CO SUN that worked to promote the successful transition of out-of-school youth to community colleges. This program helped learners gain higher scores on TABE reading and math tests, and become better prepared for postsecondary education. At the conclusion of the program, 49 of 61 students enrolled in college-level community college courses. Adult education provides opportunity for career success in the 21st century by establishing a new title, 21st Century Technology and Skills for Adult Learners.
