Africa Imperialism DBQ
Africa Imperialism- DBQ

The Age of Imperialism was a time of great wealth in the mother countries. European countries went everywhere to find places to conquer in order to get their natural resources and raw materials. The increase in colonies led to an increase in nationalism, wealth, and power. One of the key places that European wanted between 1880 and 1914 was Africa. In 1878, Africa was basically free except for some parts of south, which were controlled by Britain, and some Portuguese. By 1914, almost the entire continent was controlled by a European nation. Almost all Europeans had a good attitude toward the European acquisition of African countries because it increased nationalism, wealth, and power, however, some disagreed with it because they felt that there were problems in Europe that needed to be dealt with. Between 1880 and 1914, Africa was a great place to acquire colonies if necessary. Almost everyone in Europe was very supportive of this movement. Prince Leopold of Belgium was for this movement because he said that colonies are very useful in that they help the mother country gain wealth, natural resources, and power. (Doc. 1) He also believes that it is a great way to prove to everyone that Belgians are imperial people capable of dominating and enlightening others. Since Prince Leopold was heir to the Belgium throne, he wanted to make sure that his country had the most money and power it could get. Another European who loved the acquisition of African Colonies was Joseph Chamberlain. (Doc. 4) He believed that without the use of colonies, a country couldn’t survive. He believes that the mother country is highly dependent on its colonies raw materials and natural resources and without them half the population would starve. Another proponent to the acquisition of Africa was George Washington Williams of Belgium. (Doc. 6) He believes that not only is it good that they are acquiring land and wealth, but it is very easy to do so.

In the 1880’s the New Imperialism era began, which was when the nations of Europe began an expansion into Africa. The New Imperialism era occurred because of breakthroughs in technology and because of the search for profits that encouraged the Europeans to conquer lands outside of their European borders. Three main European colonial powers during the fight for Africa were Belgium, Great Britain, and France. All three wanted to gain access to Africa’s resources as well as their trading systems. The policies of these three European colonial powers were driving forces of the outreach into Africa between 1871 and 1914 due to their own desire to expand their boundaries for economic, political, and social reasons by using direct force. Economically, colonial powers were causing issues as well as health problems for the natives due to famine and ill treatment. Politically, this was causing rebellious out breaks as well as devastating wars and the population decreased due to conditions or expectations of the people. This caused laws to be passed to help set up the standards for establishing a colony. Socially, many were taking advantage of the natives and forcing harsh labor and burdens upon them and policies regarding the establishing colonies in Africa were questioned.…

Sometimes it was how the Europeans presented their colonization. In document one Europeans offered money to Africans for lands. This document, a drafted contract, showed that at least some were willing to cooperate with Europeans (Doc 1). Another African kingdom, Ethiopia, embraced European settlement because they shared religion in common. One of the only christian states in Africa, Ethiopia proposed their cooperation in European colonization if Europeans would grant them seaports (Doc 3). They felt confident enough to ask for land because they thought they were more similar to Europeans than other Africans in some aspects, like religion, which they hoped would overlook their race and skin tone. It would be informational to see a document accounting the reactions of previously aligned African countries if one of them sided with Europeans and the other did not. It could possible show if there was a feeling of betrayal amongst Africans as a whole, instead other the Africans vs Europeans view that is expressed through most of the documents. As shown, it was possible for Africans to react positively to European settlement but overall the reaction and actions were against…

Among those who supported conquering parts of Africa in the name of power was Prince Leopold of Belgium, who decided that attempting to take control of other European nations was futile but Africa held the possibility for more trade and more power. He reinforced his argument for imperialism by explaining how technology had advanced to the point that distance meant nothing in the face of collecting power. He expressed these ideas in a conversation, therefore one might be…

When the Europeans came to Africa, they were very forceful and they took advantage of the Africans. In the Scramble for Africa, “Representatives of fourteen European nations met in 1884 and 1885 to carve up the African continent” (Colonialism/Kenya DBQ). No Africans attended this meeting because the Europeans did not want anyone else besides them to control Africa, although they were the ones who inhabited the African continent at that time. Once King Leopold II came into power, everything changed. Leopold wanted control over Africa’s abundant resources, since they were so valuable. These resources supplied things that we use and see in everyday life. He wanted to exploit “raw materials such as wool, copper, and tin to supply their manufacturers; cash crops such as tea, coffee, and cocoa to fill their cups; and diamonds and gold to decorate themselves” (Colonialism/Kenya DBQ).…

Africa has always been known for their valuable resources, and empires have always wanted to either trade with Africa or take over Africa. During the New Imperialism Era (1881-1914), many of the European powers went after Africa and invaded many of the countries. During the European Scramble for Africa, there were different actions and reactions from different countries. Some of the African countries just let the European countries take control and chose not to fight, due to lack of technology and resources; other African countries signed deals and treaties, and the rest refused to be controlled and negated any relations to the European powers.…
