African American Racial Discrimination
Through the time there has been much racial discrimination happening in our society either because of the way someone looks, the way someone talks and even the because of their skin color. In the years 1600’s many African-Americans were being used as slaves in Africa. Men worked as farm laborers they had to harvest the crops and plant them. The women worked in the houses of the slave owners they took care of the children, made food for the family and also worked on farming. However, none of these African-Americans were paid for what they had worked for which made their living conditions very bad. On July 19, 2013, President Barack Obama gave a speech to the world on race. In that speech, Obama gives examples on how race has been affecting …show more content…

In the president's speech in the fifth paragraph, he states “And so the fact that sometimes that's unacknowledged adds to the frustration. And the fact that a lot of African-American boys are painted with a broad brush and the excuse is given, well, there are these statistics out there that show that African-American boys are more violent -- using that as an excuse to then see sons treated differently causes pain.” (Obama). When the author says “And the fact that a lot of African-American boys are painted with a broad brush” his meaning is that African-American men are painted as the bad people in our society because of their skin color and because of their tragedies in the past, this is why people say that African-Americans are more violent than other men because society has painted the faces of these fellow black men as the ones that will steal from you kill you and hurt you. This is wrong because any men are able to hurt someone and steal from someone but because their skin color is not black they are not pictured as bad people. Also, shows how people are more frightened by black males than by white males because they say they are more “violent”. This makes no sense because any person of any color skin can be as violent as a black male not just because you are not black you are not …show more content…

In the sixth paragraph of the speech, Obama states “Am I judging people as much as I can, based on not the color of their skin, but the content of their character?” (Obama). In this quote, the president is saying that we should think deep inside of ourselves and think about how we treat people differently because of their skin color. He wants us to really think about how we would act in a situation where you're in an elevator and a black man gets in, would you feel threatened because the person is black and because of the stereotypes that have been given to them. He wants us to really think and tell ourselves if we are not judging them by their skin color but by their personality. The tone is now confrontational because it is showing how the president is treating these situations with an aggressive point of view by telling us to ask ourselves and see if we are not the ones that are judging these Africans-Americans by their skin color but by their personality. If people keep judging people by their skin color this will keep being an issue because the idea of race will keep happening because people are not being judged by their

While the President is a black man in the most powerful position in the world he is not the first black man with the power to promote change. Obama is the highest ranking American black man ever he is not the only black that has tried to have a positive influence on the racial landscape of America. Before Obama we had Dr. Martin Luther King, the Rev. Jesse Jackson and Nelson Mandela all of whom have promoted civil rights, equality and cultural integration. The ability to change is in the hands of each individual person to take responsibility for the change in their circumstances. If things were different just because someone said it should be so, it sure would make all things possible and easy. Unfortunately, not all things come easy and people have to work to achieve their…

President Barack Obama addressed many issues in his speech. He began his discourse with a brief history of slaves as well as the struggle that they had to go through. He also mentioned the civil war and its effects, which lead to his main point, racial tension in America. President Obama stated that this is the minority issue compared to health care, education, and good jobs for every citizen. The people have focused all of their attention on the issue of racial tension, like a black president, and not the main problems. He also addressed that The United States needs to be unified as a country and not split because of race. “There is a lot of…

In 2008, Barack Obama becomes the first African American president. Many people thought it could be a huge step to improve the relationship between White and Black, as well as to relieve all the discrimination and prejudice towards Black community. However, there are voices saying that the problem have became worse. After listening to the podcast “The Lady Vanishes,” I would say Malcolm Gladwell would explain this phenomenon using the concept of moral self-licensing.…

The 45th President of the United States, Donald Trump, purposely spat at a black accountant: “Black guys counting my money! I hate it… I think that the guy is lazy. And it’s probably not his fault, because laziness is a trait in blacks.” In modern day society, stigma around the African-American race is still prevalent leaving ignorant people expressing harsh assertions, which are not true. African immigrants, from different areas of the continent, and African-Americans possess traits of utmost valor to surpass the injustice and brutality of their lives.…

Mr. Obama’s presence in office has reflected our most hopeful embrace of change, even as it throws light on the deeply entrenched bigotry that would reverse such change. He has been reluctant to speak about race, and hesitant to champion the causes of a valuable, if vulnerable, black constituency. He was not always free to relax into his blackness, out of fear that it would frighten white America. There was a lot he couldn’t do. But because of what he did do, the road will undoubtedly be easier for the next black…

Firstly, President Obama uses an ethical appeal known as ethos. An ethical appeal establishes a speaker or the writer’s credibility. He states that “I am the son of a black man from Kenya and a white woman from Kansas. I was raised with the help of a white grandfather…and a white grandmother. I am married to a black American who carries within her the blood of slaves and slave owners…I have brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, uncles and cousins, of every race and every hue, scattered across three continents”. I agree with what President Obama has shared about how race has an impact on his life. I think he establishes himself as a man of many races who can relate to almost every race in America. By doing so he shows how he is the perfect man for the job to deal with the concerning issues on racism in America.…

Throughout World War Two, it was not only the Allied Leaders’ goal to defeat the Axis power, but to create a peaceful post war. They had to be cooperative, cunning, and diligent in order to accomplish their intents. The Allied Leaders were successful during World War Two based on their individual backgrounds, motivations, and the events they participated in. The “Big Three”, or Allied leaders, were Franklin Delano Roosevelt the U.S. president, Winston Churchill the Prime Minister of Great Britain, and Joseph Stalin the dictator of Russia, all with unique history.…

In our society today our black boys are faced with the stigma of discrimination and racism. Individuals can respond to the Travon Martin dilemma which is explained in the article titled Requiem for Travon Martin: When Will America stop destroying the Lives of Black Boys. Many of our residents may respond to this statement in a negative or positive manner, while others may leave this decision of our President Barak Obama. However, according to Mr. Oreilly when “responding to President Obama’s speech regarding the not guilty verdict in the Travon Martin case remarked that it was wrong for Zimmerman to confront Martin based on his appearance”. One may reach the notion that racism does not exist in our society anymore while others may believe that racism…

But even in today’s society African-Americans are at times dealing with racism, even though many are well educated men and women who hold upstanding jobs. In some people’s eyes the education, religion, or the rights of freedom do not mean much if you are referring to people of other races. Once a race has been stereotyped by some, others seem to not be able to let go of that image.…

Instead of claiming that white people are the cause of discrimination against African American, Soaphead thinks that black people are the cause of it because they are the ones with flaws. His opinion demonstrates self-hatred African American used to have. One of the reason African American hated themselves is because majority of the public hated them too, so they felt worthless and began to hate themselves. this is relevant to Obama's comment on race relation as it shows that race is a “divisive force in our society.” In contrast to the past, many white people do not hate African American in the present, some even support them, also African American nowadays are proud of themselves and stand up for themselves, which proves Obama's comment “race…

The article “Why I’m Black, Not African American”, written by John H. McWhorter, is about the difference between the terms, now used by many, “African American” and “Black”. The author is arguing that people from an African dissent should be called “Black” because it carries remembrance and pride through the sound. He explains that “African American” is a term used too much and isn’t a proper way to explain the struggle, hardship, and slavery our ancestors went through. Personally, I prefer the term “African American” because that’s what I’ve been using and been identified as since moving to America a decade ago. I always thought that the term “Black” was used for the people that were born here and being called “African American” also tells people that you weren’t born in America, which is why I prefer “African American”. Some people including some of my friends that were born in Africa but came to the US when they were little prefer to be called “Black” because they are ashamed to be called African. In the article “Our Biracial President” the author James Hannaham is trying to explain that the color of someone’s skin doesn’t determine who they are. Instead it just points to their cultural background. I agree with the author because if everyone didn’t care about each other’s skin color there wouldn’t be wars or gaps between everyone. But instead people are divided by race and skin color. Having a president that is biracial isn’t going to affect the county’s economy. Just because Obama is half black doesn’t mean that he’s not smart or as Hannaham says it doesn’t mean he’s going to have diamond grills that read “PREZ”. These stereotypes need to stop because they are ruining the way people interact with each other.…

One of the most dramatic demographic events that had a significant change in America would be the Great Migration. It had to do with the moving of 6 million of African American from the southern hemisphere of the united states to the northern hemisphere around the time of the 20th century. To better explain this event in American history it would be best to start with the chain of events that caused it in the first place. That starting point would have to be the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. This was an announcement that was laid out to say that if any state if not by the start of the 1863 that is in rebellion would have all there slaves declared…

Throughout history African Americans have been discriminated, and to this day are treated horrible. It has gotten better over the years so much so that they can do the same things everyone else can. This wasn’t always the case especially in the 1800’s. Even though this was the case many were able to use art to feel free. Many of them used art to spread a message of their social division. This was so people would understand their social, economic and political inequality.…
