The Role Of The Allied Leaders During World War Two
Throughout World War Two, it was not only the Allied Leaders’ goal to defeat the Axis power, but to create a peaceful post war. They had to be cooperative, cunning, and diligent in order to accomplish their intents. The Allied Leaders were successful during World War Two based on their individual backgrounds, motivations, and the events they participated in. The “Big Three”, or Allied leaders, were Franklin Delano Roosevelt the U.S. president, Winston Churchill the Prime Minister of Great Britain, and Joseph Stalin the dictator of Russia, all with unique history. Chamberlain had declared war on Germany on September 3, 1939, but Winston Churchill then became prime minister on May 10, 1940. Even though he was against communism, he joined forces with Stalin to stop the Nazis. Stalin brought the Soviet Union into a non-aggression pact with Germany in 1939, which enabled him to annex Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and parts of Romania. In 1940, Franklin Roosevelt helped congress sign the Lend-lease which kept the U.S. neutral while still being able to help the Allies, but in 1941 when Japan attacks Pearl Harbour, America declares war. Congress gave F.D.R. full authority over farming, manufacturing, labor, prices, wages, transportation, and allotment of raw materials. Executive order 9066 imprisons many Japanese-Americans on U.S. soil. Roosevelt helped the Allies liberate Paris on June 6, 1944 which later became known as D-Day. When he died in 1945, Harry Truman became president after only 82 days as the vice-president. On May 7th, Germany surrenders and Hitler commits suicide. When Truman discovers he can save a quarter of a million American lives by dropping atomic bombs in Japan, that’s exactly what he did. On August 6, 1945, the U.S. bombed Hiroshima, and then on August 9, bombed Nagasaki. Japan surrenders on August 15. After the war, Stalin tried to force communism on Europe.
