Although some (few)white slave owners thought that since slaves were getting free food and a place to sleep they were getting benefits for being slaves, being a slave/A.A was actually a huge disadvantage because they were not able to own property (slaves) and in order to take part in the cotton business which was 60% of the economy at the time you had to own a slave. This was a crucial part in economics and race was the determining factor of where someone stood. The advantage of being able to own property for white males over A.A was huge because …show more content…
most of the wealthiest people were plantation owners and most profits came from using slave labor and since A.A were seen as property they were not able to own any property which included but was not limited to slaves, businesses, or land. This made becoming a rich as an A.A practically impossible, in fact most A.A that were lucky enough to be free were not able to earn enough to have any extra materials apart from necessities like food and shelter.
In society an advantage of being a white male is that they were above A.A no matter how poor they were.
This helped them because they were always above someone else and that helped them keep their morals up and A.A had little reasons/ways to keep their morals up. The reason why this was important is because they were discriminated because of the color of their skin and in society they were everyone’s punching bag. Also white males had better opportunities than A.A because they had free will and they were able to choose if they wanted to pursue a high status or just go by life as a low class, they were free to choose and this let them have a better life. Another advantage white males had over A.A is that they were above A.A no matter how poor they were. This helped them because they were always above someone else and that helped them keep their morals up and A.A had little reasons/ways to keep their morals
up.
In politics your race played the biggest role on if a person had a chance at succeeding.A.A had absolutely no power, they could not vote or run for any positions in government. Since only white males voted and ran the government Jim crow laws were passed to segregate A.A and they could not do a thing about it. Politics was the only way someone could change something in society and not having a say in it was a crucial reason why A.A had such a disadvantage in this period.
In conclusion race played an essential role in economics, society, and politics, because if you were white things were easier to accomplish than if you were A.A and were constantly looked down upon. The reason is because in economics the only way to succeed was to own property, slaves, and businesses and A.A were not able to do any of these. Also in society in order to be considered of high class you needed to be a wealthy white male and all of these things were impossible for A.A to accomplish. Lastly in politics A.A were not able to vote or run for office and that was the only way to make a change at the time. The American experience during early 19th century depended on race as illustrated by the lives of african Americans, Whites and the reason this is important is because only white males were able to succeed in these areas and they are the only people to be considered of high class.
