Kipnis’s perspective on coupledom, although not entirely her point of view, was a different vision than that of my own. I perceive love to be finding yourself in your other half, them making you a better person and contributing to who you are. I believe that love is able to awaken parts of the soul that nothing else can feasibly touch. However, Kipnis has a different spin on the idea of love which can be taken from the title, ‘Against Love’. There were statements on how much work goes into the fundamentals of love. As well as how if there is work put into a relationship than you must be doing it wrong because that then makes you have to work at it. Which can make it sound like a chore so people don’t put as much effort in and this can lead to the thought process about the foundation of love. How can two completely different individuals find a happy medium if there is no work involved or communication? Kipnis does imply that listening and hearing are two completely different things and to truly understand them you must practice what you preach. But there is more to love than ‘working at it’. All relationships need both individuals to understand each other which can be sought out through communication. My current relationship is based around communication and I understand that listening to the other can be a hole where information gets lost.
