One of the most prominent examples of this is Christopher Columbus’ discovery of islands in what he thought was the Indian Sea. With the help of the printing press, his letter that stated what he found was able to be printed and published all over Europe in four different languages in a matter of nearly a month to a year. In the map entitled “Distribution of Columbus’ Letter” it shows that his letter was printed and published in several cities across Europe, such as Barcelona, Valladolid, Antwerp, Paris, Rome, Florence, Basel in four different languages, including Spanish, Latin, Italian, and French (Concerning the Islands Recently Discovered in the Indian Sea, 1493). This shows that the printing press was important to the age of exploration because without it, Columbus’ letter would not have been able to get to everyone all over Europe as quickly, and what he found would not have been known by much other than the people of Spain and others whom Columbus came into contact with. This is due to the fact that it allowed for hat explorers found to be printed and published shortly after they made their discoveries and for stories about exploration and travel to be printed quickly, allowing for more knowledge and interest in it to spread. WIthout the printing press so many discoveries made during the late 1400s and early 1500s would not have occurred. Therefore, Johannes Gutenberg did make an incredible impact on the world with his movable type printing press especially in the age of exploration.
