Aggregate Testing
Coursework 1: Aggregate testing

This report was an investigation into different standard testing methods used for aggregates; Sieve Analysis, Moisture Content Determination and Determination of Voids Content and Density. The experiments precisely verified that the aggregates complied with British Standards.

Introduction
In this report, I shall be investigating a selection of techniques used to test aggregates to observe if they comply with British Standards. Both coarse and fine aggregates are vital components of cement, so to ensure our cement is to its utmost quality, it is critical that we test the aggregates to guarantee we gain the appropriate properties from our cement. Three tests shall be carried out; a sieve analysis test on coarse (“Small” + “Large”) and fine aggregate, “Speedy” moisture meter test on both aggregates (“Small” coarse fine) and finally a voidmeter test on “Large” coarse and fine aggregate. I am hoping to find that the aggregates comply with British Standards.
Test 1: Sieve Analysis
Sieve analysis helps to determine the particle size distribution of the coarse and fine aggregates (Civil Engineering Portal, 2007). For this analysis, three sieve tests will have to be carried out; “large” coarse aggregates, “small” coarse aggregates and fine aggregates. Before we begin sieving, although inaccurate, I assumed that the samples have been oven dried to a constant weight and that there no impurities in the samples (Tapp, T, (2012). How to carry out a sieve analysis on an aggregate sample). The following courses of action were necessary for the investigation:

Size grades of soil are named sand, silt, and clay, which includes colloids. Size grades are defined using the metric system. Use Figure 4.8 from the textbook to fill in the following chart. Specify the type and size and description of the particle. In some cases, particle size will be less than some value or greater than another value. For instance, gravel is greater than 2.0 mm.…

Materiality needs to be based differently when determining planning materiality because every business is different and every department in the financial statements need to be address in different ways. Also, certain departments can have a higher materiality rate as others; such as current assets or current liabilities. Net revenues and total assets is an area of the financial statements where materiality should not be greater than 2% materiality. Financial information is prepared for multiple users for many different reasons.…

The Purpose of lab 1.4 Measuring Volume by Displacement of Water was to determine the fraction of air in different granulated solids. The lab cocised of one test done on four different granular solid; with up to 3 trials on each solid. When all tests are done and put in tables, and the calculations are made, the conclusion is that grain size does not affect that fraction of air. To be able to find the fraction of air, 3 measurement had to be taken, the volume of the solid with air, the volume of water, and the volume of the solid with water.…

For concrete is a mixture of coarse (stone or brick chips) and fine (generally sand or crushed stone) aggregates with a binder material like usually Portland cement. When mixed with a small amount of water, the cement hydrates to form microscopic opaque crystal lattices encapsulating and locking the aggregate into a rigid structure. Typical concrete mixes have high resistance to compressive stresses about 28 MPa. However, any appreciable tension (due to bending) will break the microscopic rigid lattice, resulting in cracking and separation of the concrete. For this reason, typical non-reinforced concrete must be well supported to prevent the development of tension.…

Summary of Procedures: There are three sections of this experiment for section A, a regularly shaped object was obtained and the volume and mass was calculated to find the density of the regularly shaped object. In the second part of section A, sample of metal pellets were obtain and asked to find the density of the pallets. The metal pellets were weighed to calculate the mass. Using the graduated cylinder, 50mL were approximately added to the graduated cylinder. The pellets were then added into the graduated cylinder and to get the volume of the pellets by subtracting the volume of the water and the pellets by the volume of just the water itself. For the 2nd part of this experiment part B a 25 mL cylinder was used the empty cylinder was weighed on the electronic beam balance then 23.0 mL’s of distilled water was added and weighed again to calculate the mass of the water as well as the density was calculated. The same process was performed to calculate the density of an unknown substance. The third part Section C 5-25% of sodium chloride was prepared by the instructor. For each percent concentration of sodium chloride a 25 mL was prepared. Weighing the graduated cylinder before and after the sodium chloride was transferred the density were calculation.…

The size distribution is often of critical importance to the way the material performs in use. A sieve analysis can be performed on any type of non-organic or organic granular materials including sands, crushed rock, clays, granite, feldspars, coal, soil, a wide range of manufactured powders, grain and seeds, down to a minimum size depending on the exact method. Being such a simple technique of particle sizing, it is probably the most common.…
