introduction A sieve analysis or gradation test is a practice or procedure used commonly used in civil engineering to assess the particle size distribution also called gradation of a granular material.

The size distribution is often of critical importance to the way the material performs in use. A sieve analysis can be performed on any type of non-organic or organic granular materials including sands, crushed rock, clays, granite, feldspars, coal, soil, a wide range of manufactured powders, grain and seeds, down to a minimum size depending on the exact method. Being such a simple technique of particle sizing, it is probably the most common.

objective * To determine the particle size distribution and fineness modulus of fine and coarse aggregates.

apparatus * Sample divides ( metal tray for use in quartering ) * Test sieves and nesting guard size ( BS410 ) * Sieve shaker * Weighing machine * Table below shows the set of sieves of the sizes and aperture

coarse aggregate | fine aggregate | Square hole perforated plate, 450mm or 300mm diameter | Wire cloth, 300mm or 200mm diameter | mm | mm | 75.0 | 3.35 | 63.0 | 2.36 | 50.0 | 1.70 | 37.5 | 1.18 | 28.0 | μm | 20.0 | 850 | 14.0 | 600 | 10.0 | 425 | 6.30 | 300 | 5.00 | 212 | - | 150 | - | 75 |

theory

Particle size distribution is a grading of granular materials among various size, expressed in terms of cumulative percentages larger or smaller than each of the series of sizes of sieve opening as according to BS 410:1986.

Fine aggregate, often called sand ( BS 882: 1992) are those granular materials having size not larger than 5mm. coarse aggregate are those granular materials having at least 5mm in size.

Fineness modulus is a numerical index of fineness that gives some idea about the mean size of the particles in the

Sand is a naturally occurring granular material composed of finely divided rock and mineral particles. The composition of sand is highly variable, depending on the local rock sources and conditions, but the most common constituent of sand in inland continental settings and non-tropical coastal settings is silica (silicon dioxide, or SiO2), usually in the…

Size grades of soil are named sand, silt, and clay, which includes colloids. Size grades are defined using the metric system. Use Figure 4.8 from the textbook to fill in the following chart. Specify the type and size and description of the particle. In some cases, particle size will be less than some value or greater than another value. For instance, gravel is greater than 2.0 mm.…

For this procedure in this experiment it consisted of different processes to separate a mixture of solids into the four individual solids: sand, Table Salt, iron fillings, and Raisens. To remove the iron fillings from the mixture I used a magnet and scanned it across the entire mixture and the magnet forced picked up all the iron pieces. Then to separate the sand from the rest of the mixture I heated the mixture with water in a beaker and when I poured the heated liquid into a cup the sand remained in the bottom of the beaker. Lastly to separate the Raisens and Table Salt, I used a filtration system and the Table Salt and water drained into a cup while the Raisens remained on the filter.…

Therefore we were able to separate the parts with simple methods. Separating the largest part of the mixture with a strainer was the easiest of the procedures. The iron filings are magnetic so using a magnet, with several passes, produced all the filings. Salt is water soluble, so mixing it with water and using a filter to strain the salt water from the larger sand particles was preferred. The method used by group 1 produced the results closest to the original weight. The method used was the most precise as compared to all other instances. The results over all groups were either over or under initial weight. To receive closer measurements a better salt wash to separate salt from sand would give more accurate results. Also a better straining method that doesn’t absorb some of the salt solution and trap sand would give more exact measurements of the individual components of the…
