Aging and Disability Worksheet

Identify 2 or 3 issues faced by the aging population.

1 Unequal treatment in employment - Poverty
2 Face prejudice and discrimination - Ageism
3 Face isolation – Elderly Abuse

What is ageism? How does ageism influence the presence of diversity in society?

Ageism is the practice of prejudice of discrimination to the elderly. The way that ageism influences the presence of diversity in society is by robbing them of their of their choices, independence and treating them with disrespect. Also by treating them as if they are unable to handle things for themselves as if they have reverted back to an infantile stage. It should be noted that the elderly have a lot of knowledge and wisdom to bring to the table and are able to do the same if not more than society gives them credit for. Society also views elderly people as sickly, frail and unable to take care of themselves.

What is the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)? How does the ADA address issues for the aging population?

The ADA is a civil rights law that was enacted in 1990 and that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities. This law addresses the issues for the aging population by protecting anyone that is 40+ from being fired or from employment discrimination. It is designed to protect the aging and/or elderly from being passed over for a promotion or raise, however, it is difficult. This law does in fact protect against being fired, however, it does not do anything for helping obtain employment because of your age. This law was definitely designed to protect the elderly or aging, and in short does help to some degree, however, I personally believe that there is more that can be done to protect the aging or elderly a little more than they are.

What is being done to address the issues you identified?

There are political organizations that have been established for the elderly. One of those organizations is the Older

Elder income will affect everyone who has the good fortune to live long enough to grow old. Being elderly is an open status because people are elderly for only part of their lives. The elderly that are at the highest risk of being poor or disadvantaged fall into categories of people who are at highest risk of being poor throughout the life course, those that fall below the poverty level during their lifetime. (Sociology, 13th Edition). The elderly that fall below the poverty level are more likely to need elder income support to transition into old age with grace. This paper will discuss how historical values of __________have influenced the extent to which America has treated elder income support as a social problem and the social policies, such as _________ designed to address elder income support. It will also address how social work’s social justice mission and what sort of social policy approach is needed to address this social problem. Jackie, nicely written but add specifics so that the…

-Ageism is discrimination and to discriminate against someone for who or what they are is totally going against diversity. Diversity allows us to all be individuals and still live happily. When people are targeted because of the year they were born this causes them to feel left out. A common misunderstanding about diversity is that only certain persons or groups are included. In truth, each and every attribute of an individual is encompassed in diversity. Everyone has a unique perspective that is defined and shaped by many experiences and influences (thehumanequation.com).…

The federal Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) of 1967 was passed to protect workers of age 40 years or older from being fired because of their age and replaced with younger workers who presumably would receive lower salaries (p. 396). The federal Age Discrimination in Employment Act has been able to address particular issues concerning the aging population in ways that prohibit employers from discrimination against persons 40 years or older in hiring, discharge, compensation, terms, and conditions or privileges of employment. It too prohibits discrimination regarding benefit programs and retirement plans. Additionally, the Age and Discrimination in Employment Act includes limiting, segregating, or…

Ageism is the prejudice and discrimination against the elderly. (pg. 395 racial and ethnic groups) Society view the elderly as disease and death and ends up glorifying youth as the ideal thing to be. Most middle age people are upset to be getting older because of these stereotypes about the elderly. 84% of people over the age of 60 have been subjected to ageism whether it was at a job where they were looked at as a liability or just in society itself. Some elderly people deal with discrimination from people who are afraid to get old and see the elderly as a reminder of what they are going to deal with. (pg. 395-396 racial and ethnic groups)…

Ageism is manifested in many ways, some explicit, some implicit, such as the presumption that older persons are undesirable, because of the values embraced by society that youth is better and more flattering, in terms of looks, ideals, freshness, etc. Part of the problem that people who are confronted with ageism face, almost mirror the terms “has-been,” “stale,” and “out of date.”…
