Introduction: According to the Bohr atomic model, electrons orbit the nucleus in fixed paths with specific energies. Each path is therefore often referred to as an “energy level”. Electrons possessing the lowest energy are found in the levels closest to the nucleus. Electrons of higher energy are located in progressively more distant energy levels.…

We all know bowling, with modern technology, but have you ever used a lopsided ball to ‘kiss’ jacks? Maybe even heard of fighting roosters with blades attached to their feet. You can see how strange and unusual the sports they played back then were, but to them it was a popular form of entertainment for all. In this Elizabethan Era is when sports just started to become popular with players, and spectators (Alchin "Elizabethan Sports"). Many of Elizabethan era sports were dangerous and violent, one even watching trained bulldogs kill a bull. Three of the main sport categories were blood, team, and individual sports. These inhumane sports were considered ‘blood sports’ due to the blood and gore (Davis Life in Elizabethan days 2007). The spectators…

Concurring with analytical psychologist, Carl Jung’s “By-Product” theory that the brain attempts to turn those recognized impulses into sensory input; producing vivid hallucinations, know as dreams, it is understandable that the brain then tries to make sense of those stimuli and their origins as well as causes. However, research using PET scans has shown that the part of the brain that makes sense of these stimulations is fairly inactive during sleep (Wade, 1998). This, in turn, can end up being the result of the strange scenarios that can occur in REM sleep and the reason that dreams are more emotionally afflicting rather than structurally coherent. “The fact that a fairly powerful stimulus will awaken us at anytime is evidence that even in sleep the soul is in constant contact with whatever is situated or occurring in the world outside the body. The sensory stimuli that reach us during sleep may very well become sources of dreams (Freud, 1953).” Many seemingly confusing parts of dreams can very well be attributed to stimulus that occurs extracorporeally. Ergo, individuals are capable of interpreting the meaning behind certain parts of his or her dream as simply reactions to disturbances that were recognized by the sleeping mind. A study by research psychologists, Carey K.…

I beg farther to remark, if my theory and pretensions, as to the nature, cause, and extent of the phenomena of nervous sleep [i.e., hypnotism] have none of the fascinations of the transcendental to captivate the lovers of the marvellous, the credulous and enthusiastic, which the pretensions and alleged occult agency of the mesmerists have, still I hope my views will not be the less acceptable to honest and sober-minded men, because they are all level to our comprehension, and reconcilable with well-known physiological…

At a time when relatively few women worked outside the home, Barton built a career helping others. She was never married, as she knew the restrictions of a married woman at the time, but had a relationship with John J. Elwell. During the end of the American Civil War, Barton worked at a hospital she made helping the people at the Andersonville prison camp where 13,000 people died.…

The first and most common type is sleep. This altered state is controlled by the circadian rhythm, which is part of the human body’s biological rhythm. There are two theories of why humans sleep the adaptive theory that states that sleep patterns are evolved to avoid predators. The restorative theory states that sleep is necessary for the body to stay healthy. There are two types of sleep that a person will experience, Rapid Eye Movement (R.E.M.) where dreaming takes place and Non-R.E.M. which is more restful for the mind and body. A behavior that is associated with this altered state is sleep deprivation, which can result in serious health issues and affect mental performance (Pearson Learning Solutions, 2013). The second type, which is tied to sleep, is dreams. This altered state takes place during the R.E.M. type of sleep. A person can be in this altered state four to five times a night. A behavior that can be linked to this state is night terrors or nightmares that causes a person to awake suddenly and very afraid (Pearson Learning Solutions, 2013). The third type of altered state is hypnosis, where a person is susceptible to suggestion. As with sleep there is also two theories that try to explains this altered consciousness, first is disassociation, where the immediate consciousness of the mind is effect and the sub-consciousness is alert and aware. The second is social cognitive where the person is fully aware and is role-playing. An example of the use of hypnosis is pain relief, which the person’s…

The main suspects at this time are Ben Hill, Michelle Shelton, Candie Harris, Sam MacCarty, and Phil Ackers. The red flags in this case deal primarily with a lack in segregation of duties. These suspects all juggle multiple roles, some of which are not listed in their job description. Some of these suspects actively seek out additional responsibilities and place themselves in roles where they probably do not belong. Further rationalization for choosing these suspects is outlined below.…

In discussions of ticking time bombs, one controversial issue has been how to deal with the alleged guilty terrorist once he is captured. On the one hand, some people, including Michael Levin, a libertarian writer and educator, argue that it is in the US government’s right to torture the guilty terrorist because his knowledge could be used to save the lives of millions. On the other hand, others, such as Philip Heymann, who is a writer that had worked in the government field, firmly states that torture should never be used because the chance that it will produce true and useful information is nearly impossible and it is vastly more crucial to preserve the international bans on torture. Shirley Jackson elaborates on Heymann’s view when she…

Online, physically, or verbally you can be a victim of being bullied. You don’t have to keep things as they are. The question is how to handle the situation (Do you attack the bully and become the bully yourself? Or do you ignore the bully and pretend all is well?) What you do is speak up and ask for help. I would know, because not only was I a victim, I was also a person who stood by and simply watched it happen.…

In NASA, the Mars science lab rover is acknowledged, over a budget at 2.5 billion dollars. Although Obama’s Fiscal plan for 2013 would incise NASA’s funds from 587 million dollars to 360 million dollars, no quantity of money is worth Mars exploration. Mars is still merely a rocky surface in the midst of no indication of water or active geology. Space exploration is exceptionally expensive to the citizens of the United States; the government could unquestionably use this money to better the country where the people live. Exploration costs millions of dollars which is completely unnecessary to provide the NASA space program.…

Sleep is an extremely interesting phenomenon in which the mind almost completely departs from the usual realm of consciousness (Foulkes, 1999). Many theories have been proposed over the years as to why we need sleep. An essential part of sleep is the surreal world and narrative that is experienced during the state known as dreaming (Combs & Krippner, 1998).…

Persuasive Essay : Many people would be happy and satisfied if they were in a relationship with money and fame. Doesn't that seem like the perfect life? Everyone begins to think that in life that's all that matters, and that's all they need, nothing could be better. Society dictates our morals, feelings, the way we do things and try's to tell us certain things we do are wrong and we need to do them the way they feel necessary. Our generations to come will have no clue what the meaning of a true, harmonious, happy life. They begin to think that not telling the truth is ok , and eventually get so use to it that even if they could hear the truth they wouldn't want to. It becomes part of their daily life. Clearly our society, or government has their own sneaky, conniving ways to try and brain wash everyone. Due to the problem that most people would rather have love, money, and fame, it's very rare to find some one who doesn't have any of that but is satisfied with only knowing the truth. People look up to celebrities, but they do not set good examples or try to be role models. In proposing a solution to the problem of adhering to the actions of celebrities, the analysis relates to Henry David Thoreau's belief in individuality as he talked about in his book Walden. Who is your hero? Usually the answer to this question, at least for many of us, involves a famous actor or singer, a celebrity. The celebrities of the world are the wealthiest, most beautiful and most stylish individuals to walk upon the planet. These icons, however, seem to have no moral dilemma whatsoever with corrupting the public. They are role models to the public, just as parents are role models to their children. Children mirror the actions of their parents, as does society the actions of celebrities. Suddenly, few people in the world are content because they do not live the same lifestyle as Madonna or Michael Jordan. Henry David Thoreau offers solutions in his work, Walden, to the constant societal…
