Aibileen Clark – One of the novel’s three narrators, Aibileen is a wise but reserved middle-aged black maid who takes pride in knowing that she has helped raise seventeen white children in her lifetime. Aibileen cares the most about two people in this world: her best friend Minny and Mae Mobley, the white girl she raises over the course of novel. Feeling sorry for someone, but not agreeing with them. As humans we have all felt this feeling at least once in our lifetime. In the book The Awakening, by “Kate Chopin” Kate Chopin sympathizes with the main character Edna but doesn’t pity her. I agree with Kate, because even though she’s married with Leonce a man that she doesn't love and has children with him, she is still free not attached to him at all. Another reason I agree with Kate is that she doesn’t pity Edna. She spends time and loves Robert rather than loving her own husband.…

‘It is through the characters that the themes of a novel come to life.’ Without characters the author would not be able to expand on the themes and provide depth into the novel. There would be no emotion in the novel and it would not be interesting to read. ‘A Bridge to Wiseman’s cove,’ by James Maloney, uses characters such as Carl, Harley and Justine to make the novel come to life through the themes of friendship, abandonment and support.…

I have read two-thirds of, It's Kind of a Funny Story. I was supposed to stop at half way, but it is so good that I lost track of time. Craig Gilner is such an intense character with many difficulties trying to manage his stressful life. He has support from numerous people, including his family and his friends. One goal Craig is approaching, is to be a better Craig. Checking himself into the hospital for having suicidal tendencies was already a big step in trying to reach this goal. That shows how much he wants to change, when things could have very easily went a different way. The actions that Craig took that night when he called the suicide hot line demonstrates the kind of person he wants to be. Craig realizes that he needs to get better, which makes me think his motivation for completing this goal is fantasizing about how great his life is going to be when he…

To say that there is no good in evil is to deny the very reality of evil’s existence. Black and white thinking such as the topic previously stated is what truly can hurt us the most. When you look at moral issues you must acknowledge that it is a grey spectrum, with many different viewpoints. If I told any person who has actually read East of Eden that I admired Cathy? They would think me insane and possibly give me some nasty looks, as well as cross the street when I walk past. But since you have to read this essay, I think it’s fair that I make my point. Cathy is a real go-getter, she does what she has to to make ends meet. She isn’t easily swayed, and has a strong moral foundation, whether or not it’s a good one is a moot point. Lastly, she’s not easily discouraged. Even in the face of direct adversity, she brushes herself off and keeps on trucking.…

Nya deals with many problems. Here are some examples of how she persists through them. Let’s start with the very first chapter. This is where her most important situation is. She has to walk twelve hours a day (basically half a day) to get water for her family. Although the text doesn’t tell us how she got through it, it does give us hints. In the last line on page.1, it says’s “[h]eat. Time. And thorns.” This is like saying that she just accepts it. She just takes the heat and thorns and puts in her time of day to do the work. Since she knows her family needs the water throughout the day to cook, clean, and drink.…

Krakauer wrote that Chris McCandless was, "green, and he overestimated his resilience, but was sufficiently skilled to last for sixteen weeks on a little more than his wits and ten pounds of rice"(Krakauer 182). In this quote it seems that Krakauer thought that McCandless was well equipped with his skills, so that made moderately prepared to survive in any situation. I feel that McCandless was rather prepared, yet again he never could have been fully prepared for the unexpected. My opinion is that McCandless was vaguely aware of the struggles that he would encounter in the Alaskan wilderness such as his epiphany that "happiness is only real when shared" was realized when his body was dying of starvation. I believed that he found what he was…
