Aileen Wuornos:. Labelled the "Highway Hooker" or the "Damsel of Death", Wuornos received worldwide media attention when she was arrested for a year-long killing spree in which seven men were murdered. In 1992, in Florida, Wuornos was sentenced to death. She received the lethal injection on October 9, 2002, but by the time of her execution, several people came to believe Wuornos was less a cold-blooded killer than a woman victimized so often during her sad life, that she was finally driven to fight back. Tragedy met Wuornos at every turn: as a child she had explosive temper tantrums; she was having sex with neighborhood boys for spare change or cigarettes by the age of 11. Pregnant at the age of 14, she was sent to a home for unwed mothers and her baby boy was immediately put up for adoption. Returning home, she quit school and was kicked out of her grandparents' house. For five years Wuornos drifted around America, eventually finding her way to Colorado where she began running with a motorcycle gang and drinking heavily, and she turned to prostitution to make money. In 1976, she settled in Florida and the next decade was filled with failed relationships and small-time crimes, including three years in prison for a botched supermarket robbery. By 1989, Wuornos was living with her girlfriend and struggling to make money through prostitution. She began to rob and shoot her "Johns". Wuornos was caught when authorities traced her through one of her victim's cars. Prosecutors painted a picture of a violent, murderous woman who found joy in murdering men. The defense portrayed Wuornos as a scarred woman who felt there was no other way out of her situation.
Within two weeks of her January 1991 arrest, Wuornos and her attorney had sold movie rights to her story, resulting in the 2003 film Monster with Charlize Theron and Christina Ricci.
