On June 20, 2001 while her husband was at work, Andrea Yates committed what some might perceive as the most repulsive crime in history. She systematically drowned her five children in the family bathtub, while feeling nowhere close to remorseful. After committing the crime she picked up the phone dialed 9-1-1 and calmly-too calmly- ask the operator to send the cops. What they found upon arrival was a woman sitting silently on the living room couch, while her five children laid dead on the bed. What drives a woman to commit such a crime? During her trial psychologists from all over the world were fascinated with this woman who showed no remorse after killing all her children. After studying her life and the new
development they came to the realization that Andrea was a perfectionist and devout Catholic and follower of Michael Woroniecki. With this information along with the psychologist I also agree that Andrea Yates environment affected her mentality. She was also diagnosed with postpartum psychosis, she believed that her children were not developing correctly and were going to end in hell if she could not help it. This believed might have been influenced by Woroniecki’s preaching to the Yates’ that their children were going to hell for their sins. While some people still believe her to be a monster for drowning the kids, she did try to stop herself with the attempts of suicide. Both ended in the hospital where she was prescribed strong antidepressants, but still these didn’t help and when she saw no more exits to save her children from hell she took matter in her hands. Later on she claims Satan marked her and keep trying to scratch off the three 6s she believed to have on her scalp. All these evidence leads me to believe her crime was caused by a mental illness, now known as postpartum psychosis. She was a devout mother whose life was ruined by the lack of knowledge on the subject of postpartum psychosis and the way she was raised. Had Andrea Yates kept taking her medications and stopped having children when the doctor suggested, her eldest son could be 22 years old today.
