Heavy maintenance: A buyer’s market or opportunities for all?
Welcome to our March issue of AviTrader MRO, our ‘Heavy Maintenance Special’. In this issue, we have tackled the subject of heavy maintenance and asked a number of senior industry executives about their thoughts on the state of the industry: Do they see it as a buyer’s market or can a service provider influence an airline’s choice beyond the parameters of price and time? And where they see the sector 10 years down the road, when we’re due to have a whole new range of fully electric, compositeconstructed and fuel efficient next-generation aircraft flying our skies?

Within these pages we also speak to Richard
Poutier, a senior VP at resurgent lessor ILFC, which went on a massive $11.8 billion spending spree earlier this month on orders for 133 new aircraft, and we travel to Russia to see how
Gazprom has built a viable home-grown maintenance centre for business jets. And as usual, we feature our regular contribution from the
IBA, this time an insightful analysis into maintenance costs for the world’s best-selling regional jet, the Bombardier CRJ.
Next month, we shift the focus onto engine maintenance, where we ask the burning question: is engine maintenance an OEM business, or is there room for airline shops and independents? We’ll also include a lively debate on PMA

parts, with input from professionals on all sides of the table. And to continue our series of exclusive interviews with industry professionals, we will be featuring a face-to-face chat with one of the leading figures in the aviation industry, who will give us his thoughts on and expert insight into the business.
After that, we move on to

The contribution of the airline sector to the local and world economy is also another economic issue that should be noted. In UK, one of its contributions to the economy is its role in increasing jobs, whereas it was reported that aviation directly provided 180,000 jobs in the UK in 1998 - 0.8% of total employment. 40% of these jobs were in Greater London, where the industry accounted for 2.1% of all jobs (2002). This has increased over the years as attested by DfT. It reported that the aviation industry now directly supports around 200,000 jobs, and indirectly up to three times as many (2006).…

For this assignment, I selected American pilot Chuck Yeager because of his long history with the aviation and aerospace field through the U.S. military, as well as the breakthroughs he made during his service. His ambition, dignity, and patriotism for his country and line of work makes him stand out from many others in this field, and as a result, I feel he has contributed greatly to the aerospace industry.…

*The airline industry operates like the veins of the United States by pumping precious cargo throughout the country. Most *people don’t realize how different the airlines were a few decades ago. The entire industry was regulated by the government. Regulation is usually considered a more socialistic liberal idea that is opposed by conservative capitalists. Although I personally believe in a government with a small limited *role* in our daily lives, I have come to the conclusion that the airline industry is a rare exception that needs to return to regulation which would benefit the airlines and the consumers in numerous ways.…

An Industry in which I have a potential future interest for an entrepreneurial venture is the ever changing airline industry. Although facing tough numbers after the 9/11 attacks, I have always held an interest for this industry. There are several basic economic characteristics for this industry. There are many opportunities, there are also many threats. The airline industry was heavily regulated by the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) for close to 40 years. Eventually, Congress abandoned airline price and service regulation and disbanded the CAB. Since deregulation the airline industry has becoming increasingly competitive. This industry is also very large and important to the travel and tourism industry. This industry is also very important in developing new business strategies amongst different industries.…

A determined man once said, “We are embarked as pioneers upon a new science and industry in which our problems are so new and unusual that it behooves no one to dismiss any novel idea with the statement, ‘It can 't be done’ (1995). This man was William Boeing, the founder of the leading aircraft company with annual revenues of 81 billion dollars at the end of 2012 (Mergent, 2013). This drive and determination personality allowed Mr. Boeing to drop out of Yale University to begin a successful lumber business in Washington State. After attending a public flying exhibition in Los Angeles his ambitions changed and became fascinated with aviation and determined that he would be able to build bigger and better aircrafts than anyone else. Teaming up with George Conrad Westervelt a Navy engineer from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he built and designed his first seaplane the B&W. With much success in this endeavor he continued to created his own plane-building company by the name of Pacific Aero Products which grew into a new company name of Boeing Airplane Company the following year (PBS, 2005). William Boeing’s passion to succeed is at the core of The Boeing Company culture and a direct result of the growth for the past 97 years as well as into the future.…

It is a common understanding that it is moderately unfeasible to stay alive in a global network if not part of an alliance. This cooperative strategy serves as a mechanism for the Aviation Group to enter the market swiftly, and with greater impact with the support of the alliance. As long as I can remember, airplanes, airports and flying, has always fascinated me. During my childhood, we lived on the top floor of a high-rise building located directly on the Pearson Airport’s landing and take off flight path. I use to spend countless hours just gazing the sky watching airplanes. When I was old enough to operate a pc, the MS Flight Simulator was my favorite game that helped me learn and understand the various features of a cockpit and how to takeoff and land a plane. I had decided in my early middle school days that I wanted to become a pilot because flying became my passion.…
