for Government actions”(Einstein 43) calling for the government to make sure America had a bomb before Nazi Germany did. Having a famous scientist calling for the atom bombs production helped it be developed faster.
This worried President Roosevelt so much that he streamlined the production of the atom bomb. After the letter was released to the government employees in charge of the program, the idea of a bomb able to destroy a whole port and the surrounding land was revolutionary. The idea that the Nazi’s could get a hold of it before we did was terrifying. Terrifying enough that they wanted to get the bomb developed as quickly as possible to prevent that from happening. In the letter Einstein warns that the Germans are working at the bomb and could reach it before the allies could win the war. “Some of the American work on uranium is now being repeated”(Einstein 44) If he had not sent the letter, the American government wouldn’t of had the sense of urgency that they did when they initiated the Manhattan project. Einstein’s letter prioritized the bomb, increased the interest into building a bomb, and because of it the government started building the bomb. Without the letter being sent, we could be living in a much different world.
