Poetry - I Shall Paint My Nails Red

Satyamuri expresses her attitude to life in 'I shall paint my nails red' she does this by covering various different factors of life. In the poem you can see her strong views on aspects of life. In the first line of the poem she says 'public service' this reflects on how her lifestyle is because it makes the reader question what she means by public service. It could mean that she feels doing things to make her look better feels compulsory as she is a women and that she has no choice but to primp herself. This means could mean life is very demanding for her and that she is expected to do a lot for other people.

On the third line it says 'it will remind me i'm a women' this covers how she feels about being a women. She could be saying that in todays society the responsibilities of men and women are equal and could be even more for women. Society might not want to remind her that she is just a women and that she isn't expected to do much. She also could be saying that she needs to be reminded that she is only a women because of women's hectic schedules nowadays; juggling between working, looking after children and housework. She may feel she has taken on the responsibilities of a man and needs the red nail polish to remind her that she needs to be treated and must feel like a women.

The poem also discusses how she feels about those close to her 'my daughter will say ugh' and 'my lover will be surprised.' Both of these are to do with close relatives. It almost seems that she feels the need to impress them and to not let them down in some sense. Using 'ugh' an onomatopoeia, makes you think that she is used to hearing that word and her daughter is often disappointed with her. 'My lover will be surprised' this could mean she is not used to getting a positive response from her lover due to her looks. She feels the need to impress those close to her even though normally those are the people you should be able to feel

Upon reading the poem, imagery can be found throughout the entire poem. For example, in the first two lines you can imagine a doll being put away like a dead child in a chest, you cannot bring a dead child back to life. This is the burial of her childhood only to keep her memories and carry them with her for the rest of her life. Also, the second to last line where she is “wound,” twisted, “like the guts of a clock,” referring to her stomach. She feels a sense of anxiety here. This is her final emotion to conclude the poem. She fears growing up because of the responsibilities she will have to take on, the shame she felt when her period started, will…

Furthermore, due to the structure of the poem we are taken through an emotion journey with the speaker, where we are told about her history what happened to her which explains her initial anger at cousin Kate, then anger at her own former naivety and sympathy for Kate. The narrator’s questions in the first stanza express her anger and confusion at the experiences she has had to endure: ‘Why did a great lord find me out, and praise my flaxen hair? Why did a great lord find me out, and fill my heart with care?’ (lines 5-8). She suggests that before the arrival of the ‘great lord’, she was happy and ‘contented’ (line 3). She…

The entire poem is written with a tone of sadness or depression. This evokes the senses of the reader by being able to sense how the girl is feeling and see how the words of others affect her. It can be pictured, this little girl who plays with the Barbie doll and it is just a toy, but to others it is the appearance that society wants and she soon realizes that when a fellow classmate hurts her with mean words. She can not go on with the fear that everyone sees her as imperfect or flawed, so in the end she gives up on trying and eventually gives up on herself. A simile in the poem, “Her good nature wore out/like a fan belt,” the message here is that she has given up on everything.…

The narrator introduces herself as a “cottage maiden”, she is seen as humbling herself and through this first line we see her as a meek character. This meek character contrasts to the anger and jealousy we see from the narrator later in the poem. “Not mindful was I fair”, this also shows her as meek and uncaring of her looks. The repetition of “Why did a great lord find me out?” exemplifies the narrator’s annoyance and regret of her meeting with this great lord. The great lord “filled her heart with care” this shows that in contrast to her uncaring attitude towards her looks previously, this lord has now made her notice her looks and become mindful of them.…

    Pass/Fail by Linda Pastan

The role of the speaker verses the author is necessary to understand in any poem, along with the way it sounds and reads. In this poem, the author and speaker are separate. The speaker seems to be that little voice in someone’s head, making the anxiety and stress worse. It is a man verses man scenario. Someone who is taking an exam is flustered over what success they will have and the speaker is telling him/her that they will most definitely fail. “You will never graduate / from this dream / of blue books” (Pastan, 1-3). The tone Linda Pastan uses is also very condescending, giving the poem more of a punch. It is written in Middle Speech, making it more relatable to readers who have been through the same thing instead of making the speaker sound too distant or too close. Another major thing in the poem that has to do with sounds is the way the lines are paused. One line will be stopped and then another line enjambed. The lines go back and forth and this is a constant pattern throughout almost the entire thing. This seems to represent the uncertainty of the test taker as to whether they will pass or fail.…

    Wedding and Ann Duffy

The poem is started by an oxymoron which conveys Miss Havisham's feelings towards her ex-fiancé. "Beloved Sweetheart Bastard". The words "Beloved" and "Sweetheart" have connotations of precious and loved so one would assume that Miss Havisham loves this person as you would use these words with someone you love. However, these words are in contrast with the harsh swear word "bastard". "Bastard" has connotations of an awful, repulsive man towards whom she only feels hatred. This shows that one aspect of Miss Havisham's personality is that she is bitter due to her heart being broken by this man. Miss Havisham's goes on to talk about the man that left her and says that "Not a day since then/ I haven't wished him dead." The writer's use of inversion emphasises that Miss Havisham thought about her ex-fiancé every single day for decades, since the day he left her on their wedding day. From this, Miss Havisham's harsh personality is revealed. Although she feels bitterness and hatred towards her ex-lover, she still cares about him so much that she is unable to forget about him. Also, another aspect of Miss Havisham's personality that is revealed is that she is a jealous woman. Miss Havisham is portrayed as being envious as she has "Dark green pebbles for eyes". Green is the colour of jealousy while dark is creating a dark and sinister atmosphere. Her eyes are also compared to "pebbles" which are stones. This…

In a way, this poem tells how the author is unsure of the eternalness between the couple. The fact that the woman is in the dark may perhaps signify that the author is confused or wants the reader to think deeper, about the durability the relationship has. The woman seems delighted to know that the tattoos will last until death but scared to see if the relationship will eventually become filled with pain and bitterness instead of the love that is felt. Because it is so terrifying, as mentioned, the woman wants to shy away from loving this man but continues despite the consequences. The tattoos seem to be easier and less petrifying than the man, for the tattoos will never change but his love for her could, either for better or worse. Everything in life is met to be united, whether skin and needles for a tattoo, pen and paper for poetry or person and person to make that one single body. Without predicting the future, it’s rather difficult to know if these things will stay or grow apart, and which ever direction it may go, everlasting impressions are the ones that make a mark on life and history, including…

There are about four different tones used. The first tone encountered is a story telling tone; it seems as if the speaker is telling a story, neither positive nor negative. Just a story, neutral sounding almost emotionless as the speaker talks about the young woman’s childhood. However this tone quickly changes to one of judgment in line 5 where it says: “then in the magic of puberty, a classmate said: / you have a great big nose and fat legs” (5-6). After this line, however, the tone changes yet again; this time to a peppy, happy, upbeat one. The poem stays this way for the next three lines as the speaker lists out all of the girls positive qualities. These qualities just so happen to be qualities that society believe that she needs to be a good housewife. After this line the poem reverts back to the earlier tone of judgment for the next couple of lines. Just like before the tone changes rapidly and sounds helpful. Only the advice that the the speakers reports the young woman got is anything but helpful. She is advised to “play coy” and to “come on hearty/ to exercise, diet, smile, and wheedle” (13-15). In these lines the young woman is told that she is not good enough the way she is naturally; that she needs to change to be accepted. Then the poem reverts back to the earlier neutral tone until the twenty-third line where, as stated above, the tone changes to one of…

The poem discusses the funeral of a woman and how she is presented in her funeral as someone people would be more likely to romanticize than what she actually was, perhaps out of a misguided sign of respect. The other more hidden meaning behind the poem is the author's reaction to the women herself and how she is portrayed in almost a spiteful, angry way because of his anger over her wasting her life in gray dullness.…
