Kim Addonizio's 'First Poem For You'
Tattoos & Poetry equal Relationship Tattoos are permanent symbols on the body that last forever, just as poetry is a permanent symbol of true feelings of love but on paper. Tattoos and poetry can both be compared to love in a relationship just like Kim’s Addonizio’s “First Poem for You” by the use of symbolic words. Water and lightening are two words that have a symbolic meaning for the poem. “Lines of lightening pulsing just above your nipple, can find, as if by instinct, the blue swirls of water on your shoulder where a serpent twists, facing a dragon” (Kennedy, 601). Though symbols can have more than one meaning to them, the poem helps to point out the specific meaning behind the relationship. The girlfriend, of the guy with the tattoos, …show more content…
In the poem, tattoos symbolized a unique portrayal of the love in the form of poetry. That too happens without the use of poetry also. Tattoos hurt, love hurts, working to make a better relationship hurts, abusive hurts, broken bones hurt, having the most precious thing in the world, kids, hurts, and addiction hurts. And with so much hurt, the memories of what happened remains forever, like the ink of the tat, when the pain is over, the one single mark will make a impact on that person’s life or body everlastingly. That also explains why when people are in a so called serious relationship and get the other person’s name tattooed on themselves and when the relationship is over, they have to find a cover up tattoo. It is hard to cover a unwanted tattoo, but it’s easy to cover up unwanted poetry, just throw it away (unless it’s already been published). Tattoos, poetry and relationships have so many great and disappointing similarities that is could go on forever, and it is such a wonderful that in all three, a person can express themselves in ways no one can ever really understand, no matter how many educational degrees they may have. In tattoos, the expression is in the form of colors and pictures, in poetry, the expression is in the form of words and in a relationship, the expression is usually in the form of sexuality. When the word sexuality is mentioned, it …show more content…
In a way, this poem tells how the author is unsure of the eternalness between the couple. The fact that the woman is in the dark may perhaps signify that the author is confused or wants the reader to think deeper, about the durability the relationship has. The woman seems delighted to know that the tattoos will last until death but scared to see if the relationship will eventually become filled with pain and bitterness instead of the love that is felt. Because it is so terrifying, as mentioned, the woman wants to shy away from loving this man but continues despite the consequences. The tattoos seem to be easier and less petrifying than the man, for the tattoos will never change but his love for her could, either for better or worse. Everything in life is met to be united, whether skin and needles for a tattoo, pen and paper for poetry or person and person to make that one single body. Without predicting the future, it’s rather difficult to know if these things will stay or grow apart, and which ever direction it may go, everlasting impressions are the ones that make a mark on life and history, including

Consequently, tattoos may cause memories or regrets. They show parts of your life or personality being represented through it. In this case, a man named Richard Costello put up stolen motorcycle parts on eBay with bare feet and tattoos showing ‘White’ and ‘Trash’. As a result, they found him in the police databases and arrested once again. As shown in the text, “According to Sgt. Greg Stewart, Mr. Costello just tiptoed his way back to jail” (692). As well as, “Thus, Mr. Loos reasoned, it’s OK for a Pacific Islander to cover himself and all his possessions with ink and carvings, whereas “a modern person [i.e., a European] who tattoos himself is either a criminal or…

Nevertheless she explains how this time “he is going to tattoo herself on him forever” (Sanchez 17). She will last for eternity. I do find the work of the lyrics to relate to the man in a way. It could be possible that the man whom she cared for had tattoos. Lastly my final analysis is that the moon shines and finds the light in every hole, crook, and creek last for hours in darkness. The man was filled with darkness and she is the light. “Watchout for the full moon of Sonia shinin down on ya” Sonia shines with light and in a dark soul, she scares (Sanchez 17). If Sonia Sanchez had mentioned who this man was and what he did to her, the reader would be able to relate. However, since the audience does not know, we can only take guesses as to what he did. Why after a fall is she up with confidence and full of light? It is because she knows what light she is capable of. This poem is about Sonia Sanchez who knows her worth and does not take into consideration describing the man who will not realize her light and power until it is too…

One way in which the poets present their ideas about the pain of love is through their use of imagery with their poems. For example, they both use metaphors about being ‘wounded’. Fenton’s line ‘I’m one of your talking wounded’ adopts a pun which relates to the expression ‘walking wounded’, used by soldiers to imply resilience. He feels as though love has previously ‘wounded’ him, if not actually finished him off. Similarly, continuing with the theme of violence, Duffy uses an extended metaphor throughout the whole poem which presents the break-up of her relationship as a gunfight in a Western movie. Lexis such as ‘trigger’, ‘silver bullets’, ‘wide of the mark’ and ‘blast me’ presents the effect of breaking up as wounding her physically.…

Symbols are used throughout Addonizio’s sonnet. “I like to touch your tattoos in complete/darkness, when I can’t see them (1-2).” The darkness not only represents the lack of light in the room, but it also represents the speaker’s perspective on the relationship. The speaker is concerned about her relationship with her partner, “whatever persists or turns to pain between us, they will still / be there (11-12).” The tattoos, unlike the lover, are permanent. The speaker seems to be much more afraid of her partner than the tattoos. Her lover can change his feelings for her anytime; the tattoos, however, will never change. In this poem, the tattoos of the partner represent permanence and a happy long relationship.…

Reading this poem was confusing for the fact that it’s very receptive. It almost states every line in the poem more than once, but just uses it in different places throughout the poem. Overall, the theme can be understood that theirs a guy who can’t sleep hence insomnia in the title, because his lover has moved on. In the first stanza one line says “With no ring on her finger” and the line right after says “You cannot hope to hold her”. This means that the guy in the poem who can’t sleep has not asked his lover to marry him, hence why theirs no ring on her finger and therefore he cannot hold her. “She has another lover. Her heart is other where” means that the girl described in the poem that’s tossing around in bed has moved on. She has found someone else and possibly someone who will marry her, since her previous lover wouldn’t put a ring on her finger.…

Throughout this poem, the author uses forms of heuristics in order for the reader to better grasp the hidden meaning within the text. Kim Addonizio, the author of "What Do Women Want" portrays sameness in her text by repetitions "I want," "red dress," "walk," "I" and "me" are all examples of how sameness is represented. These words are expressed from the narrator's point of view, giving the reader an insight on how she feels. These repetitions in the poem express how the narrator was able to go against the norm and march to her own beat. By going against what is expected she was fighting society and its views because to her being judged was the least of her worries. She chose to stand out, and with the freedom she received, consequences followed.…

This opaque poem is about a woman who is frightful of permanence; she is worrisome that her relationship will not be as permanent as the tattoos on her partner’s body. For instance, she says “They’ll last until / you’re seared to ashes; whatever persist / or turns to pain between us, they will still / be there.”(974) which, implies the tattoos will last until he dies, and she hopes their relationship will too. The theme of this story is important, because if readers do not understand it, then they will not understand the woman’s concern with relationship…

After their intimacy moments, the persona or speaker likes it when expressing her love by kissing the permanent tattoos, which in this case represents the man himself. She adores the tattoos so much, in the fourth sentence, because no matter what happens between the two of them, the tattoos will remain unchanged until seared to ashes. After this line, the speaker say, such permanence is terrifying, reason being that, she is aware that the tattoos will always be there permanently, however, his love for her cannot be permanently promising as much as the tattoos can. This explains why she touches them in dark, that is, so her fears may never be noticed when she is comparing his lover’s tattoos to their relationship. Nevertheless, she keeps trying to at least make their relationship permanent just like the tattoos by regularly touching them.…

The poem discusses the funeral of a woman and how she is presented in her funeral as someone people would be more likely to romanticize than what she actually was, perhaps out of a misguided sign of respect. The other more hidden meaning behind the poem is the author's reaction to the women herself and how she is portrayed in almost a spiteful, angry way because of his anger over her wasting her life in gray dullness.…

For some, tattoos are more than just images and symbols, they are a way to enhance the body with beautiful artwork. For many, the body is nothing more than blank canvas which comes alive with the addition of ink. And there are some very beautiful tattoos out there, from primitive-yet-intricate tribal markings to expressive Japanese tattoos.…
