Alhambra Dinner Theatre Reflection
I decided to attend a show at a local dinner theatre, called the Alhambra Dinner Theatre, in Jacksonville, FL. My decision to do this was based on the fact that I never really allow myself to look into my artistic side as I commonly turn down attending art festivals, theatre performances, or listening to classical music. I haven’t done it before because I usually try to avoid events that I deem as uncomfortable, as I usually tend to stay inside my comfort zone. However, once I saw this assignment I began I think of the opportunities that had arose recently and if any of those opportunities were still available for me to pursue. Having recently been asked by my Grandma to attend a show at the local dinner theatre, I accepted her invitation and decided to delve outside of my comfort zone. The show was called Noel Coward’s Blithe Spirit. A synopsis of the story is that the main character, Charles wants new topics for his new novel so he …show more content…

My actions toward something affect the outcome even before I give something a chance. Having gone through this experience, I learned a valuable lesson in life in which that only positive results can come with a positive attitude. I tend to become negative in comfortable situations which isn’t fair to myself or to the event that I am attending. This has allowed me to begin to explore interest in other events and this has allowed me to come to a pivotal conclusion, in that I cannot shut down options because of how I generalize them. I shouldn’t generalize an entire category of events such as art festivals or theatre performances. Just like any other category of events such as sporting events there isn’t just one type of event in each category. This experience demonstrated that there are interests in all categories and exploring each individual interest is what makes a person

When listening and watching live performances, the venue is almost as important as the music itself. The venue that the Charles Mingus Tribute played at the night I saw them was a restaurant and bar called Stayner’s Wharf. I had been there before, but in the middle of the day with no live music. The change I saw in atmosphere from that first time I experienced the restaurant to the second was tremendous. A tucked away stage with six musicians squished onto it all playing their hearts out transformed the boring restaurant into something so much more alive. The venue was a little odd because it wasn’t positioned around the players, so many people couldn’t see the stage from their tables or stools. However, even if you…

The piece was a devised piece of drama called ‘Fire’, set in 2011 in the outskirts of London. It was about a schizophrenic teenage girl whose conscience persuaded her to undertake risky activities. The stimulus for our play was a song called ‘I hate Mondays’ from which we fashioned a piece of physical theatre on. We also used gun crime statistics as well as the life of 50 cent to help develop and influence our drama. I played the part of Olivia’s conscience and also her teacher. For the character of the conscience I wore simple black clothing, identical to Olivia’s to symbolize being her. When playing the conscience I altered my movement to delicate yet sneaky. The makeup was very simple to keep to the naturalism of the play. I also played the part of the teacher, wearing a tie to symbolize the character change. The genre of the piece was a psychological drama and the style was non-naturalistic with elements of naturalism. We used several techniques to improve our piece such as flashbacks, narration and physical theatre to keep the audience interested. It was set in the 21st century, the year 2011. I acted alongside 4 other girls in an intimate drama studio setting with raked seating with an end on stage. Throughout the play we used simple a lighting design that included spotlights, to add emphasis on monologues; slow fades to indicate the end of a scene and a blackout for a sudden end. We also used red gels for a surreal atmosphere in the dream scene. In addition, songs such as ‘Hide and Seek’ by Imogen Heap were used to create a mysterious, dark atmosphere. Our target audience was 15+ as some of the concepts were quite mature ie, sexual abuse and arson. We used 1 frame which acted as a door and a mirror. A rostra in centre back of the stage was used as a bed. We didn’t use many props except from a few wine bottles, gasoline tubs and ripped pieces of paper in the ending sequence to symbolize the fire.…

For my cultural event I choose to go to the African-American Poetry Night hosted by MCCC writing center. I found the event insightful as it highlighted well know African-American poets such as Mayo Angelou and Langston Hughes, and some poets that are not as well known, such as Marvin X. The event was open to the public, and the attendees was welcome to bring a poem or a story to share.…

The Great Depression was an awful point in history. It was a worldwide economic slump of the 1930’s. Banks, factories, and shops all closed. Millions of people were left jobless. Many people had to depend on the government or charity to provide them with their everyday needs. Rising unemployment, declining production, and falling prices spread rapidly to the rest of the world in the early 1930's. The Depression caused world trade to slow down a lot, as countries tried to help their own industries by increasing restrictions on imports.…

This Saturday on the 13th I went to see a speaker talk in Minneapolis on Nicollet Ave. I had found out about the event from a website called Meetup.com. There was a travel author planning to speak at a meeting room in a coffee shop about how living internationally can change your perspective. I thought that was intriguing so I went! It was at 2p.m that Saturday and there wasn’t a time scheduled for it to end.…

At the beginning of the project if you had asked me what I thought about those things I would have told you that Civic Engagement doesn’t matter and art is just art nothing more and I honestly thought that the entire week was going to be a total waste of my time (in the most respectful way possible to all the great teachers.) On Monday I was astonished by how much I had learnt and the knowledge of the importance of art and civic engagement and how it plays a major role in bring together a community. After this week I can say that not only was it better than regular school I’ve learnt and gained so much knowledge. My thinking on TTP also changed, on the second day when we visited TTP, and I didn’t even know what the project was, I thought “Ya, it’s grea t they bag birds! But how does this have anything to do with school and why should I care. Then I found out the purpose of the park and the legitimate troubles and issues the park needed help solving and I was ready to dive in. My thinking on the solution never really shifted our group was always totally on board with the festival idea (while maintaining an open mind.) We did and on and made tweaks and changes every day. For example at first the festival was just going to include an art workshop, flash mob, and a play (the obvious basics) then we decided to add on a mural that community would create together to strengthen the sense of family and…

I want to know all of you because I might not get this chance again. I want to know your story. Seeing that you might just impact my life in a way nobody else can and I to yours. The fair is important because of the connections, the chain reactions. The way out fair breaks down stereotypes and brings people of all ages, places, and perspectives to the same place. Events like becoming the fair queen is an expedition full of lessons. This past year I met someone who told me that when it comes to bright lights and colors he didn't like them. They appeared more belabor than anything. He liked gray, dull whites that glow in dark because unlike bright lights and colors it shows that there is more than what meets the eye. This led me to realize something. Examining the people I've surrounded myself with I came to a conclusion. I don't like “nice people”. The people who are nice, but aren't true to themselves. People who hide to fit into society's cookie cutter squares for, acceptance. You can't change the game if you let it change you first. I've discerned that it is far more important to be virtuous, and real. It is sacrosanct to open up and speak your deepest thoughts. Cry or laugh whether it is the right time or place, and make mistakes once in a while. If someone sees a red button with a sign that says “do not push” if their gut says, “do it” then guess what? They're going to be mutinous, and they're going to it. Sometimes a…

    Reflection (Seminar)

On our subject, Hospice Accommodation, our teacher was telling us about our final project which is conducting a seminar. We are tasked on Housekeeping Department. At first, I thought it was just a piece of cake, but I was wrong, it was the total opposite. It was really difficult to organize a seminar. Most especially if you are a first timer of doing such things. To make it easier, we divided the tasks to our group mates; I was assigned of doing the paper works such as the certificates, program, encoding the letters and a lot more. It was really stressful particularly on finding a speaker. Four hotels rejected our request and the day that was assigned to us to have our seminar was fast approaching. We quite felt hopeless, but our dedication makes us more determined to find a guest speaker. After lots of unwelcoming approach to the past hotels, God is so good because he took us to Crown Hotel and has Mr. Thom Richard Dy as our guest speaker. I thought it will run smoothly since we have already our speaker, but it wasn’t stop there, because we find it hard in terms of approving our certificates to our dean and our chairperson. It took us days after it has been approved by them. There are lots of requirements to be submitted and we are grateful that we accomplished all of that successfully.…
