Equality states that “It is my mind which thinks, and the judgment of my mind is the only searchlight that can find the truth” (Rand 94). In order for me to explain what this quote means, I have to break it down and understand each section. In the first half of the quote, “It is my mind which thinks,...” (Rand 94) Equality is stating that he uses his own brain/mind to think and no one else's. The second half states “..., and the judgment of my mind is the only searchlight that can find the truth” (Rand 94), which means that what Equality thinks is right and what is wrong is the only way to find the truth. The word “Searchlight” has a major significance because a searchlight is a powerful outdoor electric light used to give a sense of direction.…
13,000 people died in the Mexican-American war. Is this what one considers a victory? In the essay, Civil Disobedience, by Henry David Thoreau, the author sets his opinion on the government (as well as their influence) in the Mexican-American War. This war was raged because the United States were seeking manifest destiny and they wanted part of Mexico’s land. The author, Thoreau, distastes the government as well as the power the government is given. The author furthermore believes the government was the initial cause of the Mexican-American war. To add, it is said that Thoreau did not pay his taxes because he believed that the money was supporting the war. Thoreau writes, in Civil Disobedience, “I heartily accept the motto ‘That government…
There’s social drama, school over load, family issues, personal problems, and way more. Dealing with my own stress, I tested a few stress management techniques, which really helped to detox some of the negative stress in my life. The first method I chose was imagery, the second was volleyball, and the third was music. They helped me realize I was too blessed to stress!…
When I was a child, my guardians oft apprised to struggle exhaustively to obtain my needs. Although circumstances and society play important roles in their success and happiness, the choice people make plays the major role in their success As Thomas Paine said, "the harder the conflict the more glorious the triumph." As long as a person is a life he is able to make changes and succeed and this was proven by many people' slide such as Galileo.…
In the short story, "The Chrysanthemums," Steinbeck effectively uses symbols to help the reader understand the story's plot and obtain insight into characters' thoughts and feelings, primarily Elisa. As the story's main character, Elisa is a lonely thirty-five-year-old woman, who serves as the channel in which most of these symbols are used.…
An old adage says "never let the truth get in the way of a good story". However, where is the line drawn between embellishment and fabrication? Artistic privilege is just as it sounds; a liberty to manipulate and coerce verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and other parts of speech and sentence structure to yield a far more pleasing narrative. As with any privilege there comes responsibility, in this case, a responsibility to not change the original intent of the story or the context in which it took place.…
First, you must know what the problem is that you are facing and acknowledge it. Then, you must face the problem with an extreme effort. Once these steps are completed and only then, can you start finding a solution. The solution you find will give you a new view. Based upon this outcome, your newly acquired view must be integrated into your life pattern. Transformation on this level is often wanted but it does not come easy. These “before” and “after” states are the points that show us our personal growth. The most transformational learning experience in my life has been the discussion to go back to school. The fear of working, having a family, and making time to study and being successful in my studies presented a great problem to me. How to balance these three demanding dimensions of my life and still be the same person was puzzling. Through a trial and error process, I redefined my life pattern, taking bits of personal and casual time to maximize my effort of pursuing my goal. By putting all my focus through my spare time in my work week, it opened up extra time on my weekend to spend with my family. This new pattern I developed has brought harmony and balance to my…
“This world is but a canvas to our imagination” -Henry David Thoreau, what Jeanne Claude and Christo did was take this quote in a very literal way when they created The Gates. What they did in New York’s Central Park in February 12-27, 2005 was put up a rectangular bright orange frame that was 16 feet high with a fabric (in the same color as the frame) draping from it so it could be blown in the wind. This project reformes the outside setting by standing in the set path’s way. It does not bring a direct disturbance to the area but stand out in contrast to the way the environment looks at that time of the season. What this does is make the viewer fully experience this piece and the nature around it. How it does this is by making the onlooker…
In the essay, “Where I Lived, And what I Live For”, Henry David Thoreau writes about his experience moving and living in woods at Walden Pond. He describes how he would cut things he would do in his daily life down to proportion; for instance, instead of eating three times a day, just once. Through this experience, Thoreau is able convey his values and how he sees life. He introduces values such as naturalism, individualism, and self-sufficiency. Thoreau claims he moves to Walden because he "wished to live deliberately, to front only the essentials facts of life” (403). This essay is still relevant to today because, as Thoreau sees it, life moves too quickly and we should all slow down and enjoy life.…
Life can be so accelerated in many countries. The competition for the best job, the best quality of life or simply “a perfect life” of wealth and material things imposed by society as something to envy, can cause an enormous pressure on people of all ages. Sometimes, mental and physical wellness can be affected by Stress, a continuous feeling of worry cause by difficulties in life that prevent people from relaxing and living in harmony. Students are not the exception: they have to combine different life’s facets at the same time like academic, financial and personal that overload them with no other choice than find the perfect balance between them.…
Prioritize. To minimize stress, the best thing to do is prioritize all activities. Don't try to do everything at once. Set schedules for yourself each day, doing the most important things first. Sometimes doing things through the course of which they occur leads to more problems and stress and even depression. Extra-curricular activities such as sports, clubs, and music, may be overwhelming. Allow yourself more time to do schoolwork and rest by cutting back on some activities. Don't commit yourselves to things that you feel you may not have time for because it only builds up stress, such as attending a party your friend invited you to when you know you have a really big project to work on that's due the next day. Do you go to the party to be with the in-crowd or do you turn your friend down and stay home and work on the project? Well, I say stay home and work on the project because you know that there are going to be so many more parties you will be able to attend throughout your lifetime. As for now, your education is like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Your all time favorite show, One Tree Hill is going to be on tonight. When you get home from school, do you talk to all your friends or go online and surf the net or do you do your homework? From…
When I started high school, I felt overwhelmed by classwork and decided that ignoring this stress was the solution. I would sleep in class, use my phone in class, and read a comic book in class: anything to distract me from learning. In the beginning of that October, I remember drifting into a stupor and scrolling on the mouse for eternity, reading titles of boring books that suited my reading assignment. I had two minutes left in class to select a book for an independent reading project. I set a five-second-timer in my head and furiously scrolled past books that my peers would choose in a heartbeat. With time running out I chose the first book that peaked my interest and emailed it to my teacher. Little did I know how much Mindful Work: How Meditation Is Changing Business from the Inside Out by David Gelles would change my life.…
